Gravel Ride Pics

Old guy on a bike
Maine
40 miles on the Downeast Sunrise Trail, from Schoodic Mountain to Machias, Maine. The first 8-10 miles were on freshly graded trail, so a workout. After that it was nicely packed. Machias is home to Helen’s, home of the best pies I’ve ever tasted.
965’ of climbing on a beautiful summer day.

Obligatory picture by the pavement ends sign!
Great grassland in foreground, west side hill in back
Off the beaten track when a deer on the road is reduced to this
Looking east into the grasslands
I thought this old trailer was interesting

Thanks. Semi-interesting trivia about that photo. It's hard to see, but you can sort of make out a house at the left-hand side of the dark ridge that runs across the middle of the photo. The house is built on a small peak that has almost unobstructed 360-degree views of the ocean, Catalina Island, the Santa Monica Mountains and the whole city from Santa Monica to downtown LA. It's a really cool gated property at the end of a long dead-end street. Anyway, it belongs to Dennis Tito, who is best known for being the first private space tourist. He paid the Russians about $20 million to hitch a ride to the ISS. He made his fortune by converting his background as a JPL engineer into being one of the first "quants" (using computer modeling and mathematics to analyze the stock market). The Strava segment up his street is called "Amalfi to Astronaut's House" or something like that.

Cool temps today in Maryland, following massive storms last night. 28 mile ride, 11 on the road, rest on the C&O Canal, which was a war zone for a few miles. I needed one of those portage straps from the past, a dozen or so trees to clamber over.

I rode into DC on Sunday, touring the gardens, monuments and the repaired Capitol. Mid 90's, sweating like a pig, had a good time, always seeking shade. Glad to see most of the fences have been removed from the White House and Capitol. Normalcy is slowly returning.
