Cyclocross and Gravelbiking (Recreational) This has to be the most physically intense sport ever invented. It's high speed bicycle racing on a short off road course or riding the off pavement rides on gravel like : "Unbound Gravel". We also have a dedicated Racing forum for the Cyclocross Hard Core Racers.

New - REI Co-op Cycles - carbon & steel models

Decent (full-build) carbon all-road for $1800; and steel monster-cross for just over $1000

The steelie is basically the old Novara Mazama, which got solid reviews and IMO is a great value. If you wanted something like a salsa vaya but with better brakes, a triple crank and bar ends (for the price of the 2x8 vaya Claris I might add) it would be a contender.

The carbon framed ARDs seem decently speced for the price, though the website says clearance for up to 35mm tires only...i think that seriously limits who will buy this bike, but who knows.

We have an REI and I have seen the steel bikes. They seem pretty nice and I like the geometry on the monster cross, it is definitely an endurance fit. I had them weigh a L size and it was north of 25 lbs on their scale. So for a monstercross/backpacking bike, probably a nice option.
