Sram Cx1 medium cage RD with 11-40
Anyone tried this combo? Sram says 11-36 is the biggest you can go and the parallelagram design doesn't pivot down as the cogs get larger like shimano designs. Trying to make the 1x cross bike more gravel friendly

I've heard it doesn't work as well the the clutched RDs, I'd rather just swap to the long cage version if it doesn't work

I have no experience with this setup and I just found this randomly not long ago, but i'm pretty sure Kona doesn't spec the Rove LTD with a long cage Force 1 RD and it comes with a 10-42 cassette.
On my long cage Rival 1 I can go crazy with the B screw. I'm pretty sure the medium would clear a 40T, the overall capacity is the bigger issue here.
With SRAM 1x stuff the B-gap becomes bigger as the cage swings forward because the upper pulley is offset.

Just as an FYI I confirmed today a CX1 medium cage does clear an 11-40. There is still a bit of range on the B-screw so an 11-42 would probably work as well
