Rim size vs tire size
Raleigh lists the rims on my RXM as "Weinmann Impulse TL Double Wall, 28mm wide". The Weinmann site shows this for the Impulse TL:
IMPULSE TL
IMPULSE TLSIZE:559(26"),584(650B),622(700C=29ER)TYRE:28C-38C,1.95-2.20ERD:521.05,546.15,584.55SPOKE HOLES:28H,32H,36HWEIGHT:416G,437G,464GJOINT:SLEEVEDVALVE TYPE:PRESTA,SCHRADERANO. COLOR:SILVER,BLACKRAL COLORSBRAKE:DISC BRAKEEYELETSINGLE EYELET
So first of all I'm not sure where Raleigh is getting "28mm wide" from -- I measured them at exactly 25mm, matching the Weinmann diagram.
And second, what size tires can I safely use here? Weinmann shows 28-38c, but they also say 1.9-2.20". I was hoping to go up to 40mm, if not 42mm if I'm not picky about mud clearance. Using tubes, by the way.

I've got 38s on with room to spare. I can fit 40s no question, the only issue is how much clearance I need in the rear to feel comfortable. In the front, there is tons of room.
edit: In the rear, with Gravelkings measuring 38.5mm, I've got 5mm of clearance per side at the narrowest point (between the seatstays at the bridge). So I guess this is as big as I'll go. In the front, I've got at least 10mm per side at the narrowest part of the fork, so I could go way bigger if I wanted to go the mismatched tire route.
