gear ratio

hey you ss crossers what do you guys (girls?) run for a gear ratio?

islenska 07-01-05 09:03 PM

a good rule of thumb is a 2:1 ratio...like 34:17.

It'g going to depend on the course and the conditions, so you'll probably want to have 2-3 options. Check this out-

I'm about to build a 42-18. I'm going to use that for baseline, and adjust as I need. Really, I'm just using what's around the basement. I think 39-18 is probably in my future, but I wanted to try out the 42t biopace ring...

i ran a 38x18 most of the time, a 38x20 for hillier courses, the 18 can get pretty rough after 45 minutes when you hit those steep climbing sections, spinning faster is always an option with the 20.

I've got a 46X20 that I use on the fireroads, which seems a little bit steep for the bigger climbs but perfect for flatter areas and more moderate climbs.

I run 36x17. It can be tuff for a singletrack with steep uphills but for all around reoad/offroad it's very nice.

ha so i decided to run 52 18 (what i had from my track bike) the other day, damn my legs hurt. had to run up most hills. but was a blast.
