What kind of shoes and/or clips do competition riders use? Is there a special xcross shoe that is common for riders which allow them to run as well?

Everyone wears MTB shoes, often with toe spikes. The pedals are also usually MTB pedals -- SPDs and their ilk -- though Time's ATAC MTB pedals are, if not the most common, then at least the ones everyone talks about.

I wear Diadora Chili MTB shoes with Shimano M515 SPD pedals.

I too use time pedals, and for a while I used time shoes, both very comfortable...currently I ride with Sidi shoes and time pedals, but I like the look of the new Crank Brothers Egg Beater pedals (do a search in the forums for the many posts on them).

I think when my times die, I'll go for a pair.

I've run Sidi Dominators and Ritchey pedals in Cross. Ritcheys are a little more prone to clogging than Time pedals. Considering going to Egg Beaters this year but not done so yet.

I have shimano carbon shoes with eggbeaters.

eggbeaters are the best! You can clip in forwards or backwards, they never clog (like my 959's), they are super light, zero maintanence and cheap.

I can't imagine using any other pedal for xc or cx.

RacerX, have you raced with the egg beaters?
I have a pair on my mtb, and even in the super technical downhill stuff I don't clip out because I don't think there is enough space to put my foot on it.
I don't think they'd be good for 'cross just for this problem.

carbon sole IS the platform so there is no stability problem.

As for clipping out, I'm not sure what you mean. They are easier to clip in because you can either step on the pedal and roll your foot back until the cleat locks or you can "kick" it in forward like any other pedal.
It is 4 sided so you don't have to worry about catching the pedal on the wrong angle or side. I have jumped on the pedal at the center of my shoe and just move the foot back and clipped right in.
I have raced all season on them in xc. I love them. They are perfect for cross. The cleat is small and doesn't clog, neither does the pedal. You can enter the pedals any which way and clipping out is effortless.
they have float so it isn't hard on your knees and the lightweight, service-free design is great.

I think he means that on real technical terrain, he would normally clip out and just rest his foot atop the pedal, but is not comfortable doing this with the 'beaters due to the small platform.

Guillermo's correct.
When you mount your bike while running, it is common to have to pedal a couple of time before you can clip in, so you need good platform support for this.
I own egg beaters and I don't think they'd be great for this. But at the same time, they are so easy to clip in that we might not have this problem at all...
I gotta try it...

they aren't any harder than spds to pedal unclipped. anyway, thats what I was saying, I just jump on the pedals and pedal. Then I clip in by either rolling my foot back or forward.
Its alot easier than spds for me. I''ve had them on my cross bike for about a month and love it.
