Cyclocross and Gravelbiking (Recreational) This has to be the most physically intense sport ever invented. It's high speed bicycle racing on a short off road course or riding the off pavement rides on gravel like : "Unbound Gravel". It's steel- just bend it back and align.

And since even a new replaceable hanger should be be aligned, is there effectively a measurable difference?

I can confirm that the Double Cross is a good bike (I have the previous model), but if you get Soma something a bit out of the ordinary is the Grand Rando:
Maybe its geometry is not for everyone. It is their lightest frame, now with disc brake compatibility and thru axles.

The Renegade S1 frameset is very nice for $900, but you'll have a very hard time finding one, and it's more adventure oriented with clearance for 700x50c tires. You would probably be happier with something like the AC Zig-Zag for mainly road use with occasional light off-road.

What about the good 'ol Cross Check? If you're cool with rim brakes, (and that geo), pretty hard to beat for a versatile, affordable steel rig.
But yeah, Black Mountain MCD...on my list too...
