Are Mercury G3 Gravel Wheels really this light?

Notices
Cyclocross and Gravelbiking (Recreational) This has to be the most physically intense sport ever invented. It's high speed bicycle racing on a short off road course or riding the off pavement rides on gravel like : "Unbound Gravel". We also have a dedicated Racing forum for the Cyclocross Hard Core Racers.

Are Mercury G3 Gravel Wheels really this light?

Are Mercury G3 Gravel Wheels really this light?

Hi,

So I just weighed a pair of Mercury G3 Alloy gravel wheels and they came in at 1558 grams. On the Mercury website, these are listed at 1799 grams. Their carbon G1 are listed at 1500 grams.

I then went and weighed some BTLOS carbon GX30 wheels and they weighed 1509 grams. This is right about where they are supposed to be.

Does this make sense that the allow Mercury wheels could be 250 grams less than their stated weight?

Thanks,
Robert

I have 0 idea about your specific wheels, but if your scale says that, then thats what it is. I would trust a number right in front of me vs someone online saying its correct or not.
And easy way to confirm though is to weigh something that you know weighs a certain amount. A dumbell, a gallon of water, etc. If that is accurate, then sure your scale is correct and thats the weight of the wheels.

I agree. I use this scale regularly and it is very accurate. I just can't understand why MErcury would claim 1799 and they would weigh in almost 250 grams less. I would think that would be a huge selling point to have alloy wheels that are almost as light as carbon.

Are your wheels 650 or 700?

Maybe their stated weight strangely includes tubeless tape and valves or thru axles?

They are 700c. I'm not sure why they would include those things. They are only 24 spoke, but that still seems pretty light for aluminum and much lighter than the stated weight.

Maybe the website has a typo? Iíve seen plenty on websites and seller listings. You might drop Mercury an email if it really bugs you.

Yes, you likely will get a better answer from Mercury than on the forum.

I did contact them and while they were quick to reply, they didn't seem to know anything about what the listed spec was or even have a pair they could weigh.
