Cyclocross and Gravelbiking (Recreational) This has to be the most physically intense sport ever invented. It's high speed bicycle racing on a short off road course or riding the off pavement rides on gravel like :The Dirty Kanza". Please check my logic for a big guy 6'6" 280lbs

I think I just found the bike I want to pull the trigger on. Motobecane Fantom Cross @ bikes direct. Yes it is at bikesdirect and yes I understand what that means. I am more interested in hearing from the knowlege of this group if my logic is correct.

I am 6'6" and weigh in at about 280lbs. Up until about two years ago I use to only ride mountain bikes. I moved to Seattle and tried this road bike thing and I really like it especially as I am getting older. I am currently riding a used road bike and I would now like to buy a new nice road bike. I am thinking a cross bike is good because it does not take much with my dimensions to be diffcult on a bike. I am thinking a cross bike will give me the versitility I am looking for which is to be able to ride some maintained dirt roads from time to time and do some road work. I am not looking to do mountain biking and I am not looking to do more then 15 to 20 miles on the road at a time.

I would love to hear some feedback.

I'm the same height as you(and have been heavier). I currently have a Surly Cross Check 62 cm(TT 62 cm). My thoughts are that the Motobecane is to small (61 cm frame 59cm Top tube) if you want aluminum the only other option I have seen is the Kona Jake the Snake (I believe they make a 63 cm frame) Another steel option is the Soma Double Cross which also comes in a 62 cm(61.2 cm TT) I think the Cross Check is a well designed frame and would highly recommend it.

You sound similar in dimensions to a fellow I knew back in New York City who rides the rather beefy, yet light and strong, Cannondale Cyclocross. I ride the 52cm version of this bike and it suits me for paved and unpaved riding in the Washington DC area. It sounds like your biggest concerns should be the strongest frame and wheels you can find. I would (having worked in bike shops some years back) talking to somebody who works at your local bike shop. You might find out that your solution is not a cyclocross bike but maybe a good, stout sport touring bike.
