The Under $800 Cyclocross Bike Thread
There's a similar thread in the Road Bike forum which has been going on for a few years, but I didn't see one like that for this forum... so here goes.
I'm looking for a bargain on a cyclocross bike. Not that I think I'll ever do a cyclocross race, but because: (1) you can tour on a cyclocross bike if he has the eyelets and brazeons for racks, (2) a cross bike should be tougher than any road bike, (3) I can run wide tires if I want to. What cross bike can be had for under $800? Or is $800 ridiculously low? In the roadbike arena, there are lots of $700 bikes worth riding (Trek 1000, Specialized Allez, for example) -- not that their higher priced big brothers aren't preferrable for those who can afford them. What's available at the cheap end for cross?

Ibex, an importer, has a ridiculously cheap cyclocross bike:
https://www.ibexbikes.com/Stacks/Series_X-Ray.html
$569. Weirdly it has a triple crankset. That's the cheapest cyclocross bike I've seen, everything else seems to be around or above $800.

Hi,
I found this thread and I'm actually searching for the exact same thing: a cyclocross bike under $800. Looks like the IBEX X ray is out of stock, and I can't really find much of anything, even used on ebay for under $800. How come these bikes have such a high resale? Any ideas for where I could look for a cheap bike? Thanks!

I was actually thinking of starting a thread and getting it stickied, hopefully.
Except, for various reasons, including inflation, rising costs of everything, etcetera, I think it should be 'cross bikes for under 1000 dollars. This opens up a lot more options, too.
Also, it would be good if, when posting, people could include any experiences with the bike. Is it a good racer? More of a commuter? How's it handle?
So...should I start a new thread?

www.bikesdirect.com has a Cyclecross for about 795. I bought the next model up for about 1K, both bikes are excellent. It's listed under Road bikes, mine is a Motobecane Cylclecross Pro Fantom.

Looking at the Ibex, frameset still available. How different is this from the GnashBar 'cross frame? With the steel fork that also has disk tabs, you could have the frame/fork from SmashBar for under $200.

I say if you want a good cx bike for cheap, go used!
I just picked up a 2007 Blue CX6.5 with Ultegra FD, Ultrega crank, 105 RD, 105 brifters, Xero X-Lite wheels, Shimano canti cx brakes, Cane Creek cross tops, Cane Creek headset, Easton seatpost, truvativ stem, spd pedals...
$810 plus shipping.
The bike is basically brand new. Owner won the bike at a cx race. Owner had no need for another cx bike, already has a nice Seven Mudhoney. Owner rode it once just to try it out. The bike is FLAWLESS. $2000+ bike new for $810. Fits perfect...very similar geometry to my roadbike and tt/tri bike.
Take home story: scour the classified and ebay!
