ATAC or Frogs

Greetings,

Which is best? I prefer a set that does not use spring tension like spd's. Any other user concerns/comments that should be noted?

Thanks,
NFields

I'd go ATAC over Frogs and Crankbrothers over all. There are still a few that use the newer shimano designs for cross

Hands down Eggbeaters.

I've used SPD's in CX. Only one season and i switched to Eggbeaters. SO NICE!

After switching to eggbeaters this year I'll never run anything else. By far the best pedals I ever used but I never tried the Shimano 969

I know so many people that have broken Eggbeaters that I wouldn't go for a ride on them if somebody gave them to me. I've even seen a new pair break during a road ride! The four-sided entry sounds appealing, particularly for cross, but any benefit is quickly negated by the risk of not finishing a race on them IMHO.

Conversly, I bought my first set of Time ATAC's in 1998 and that pair is still going strong.

I have been running eggbeaters from day one and never have I broken a pair. I have them on four bikes including my CrossPro. Just a little wax on the rails every now and then, I have never had to do anything else.

The very first version of Eggbeaters did have a design flaw that would allow the body to come off the spindle, but that's been long resolved.

I second the Time Atac's, bought 2 pairs in 1996 after using shimano DX spds. Just moved them onto my road training bike as I've bought some of the latest atacs, which I have to say feel even better.

Not tried the eggbeaters, but have 2 team mates that are looking at changing them (reason not known).

I work at a shop in Toronto, so this isn't "I heard from a guy ..."

I saw dozens of pairs of Crank Bros pedals come in and out of the shop w/ no issues at all. That being said, I also saw two new pairs of Eggbeater C pedals come back for warranty repair/replacement. The "cage" snapped at the same point on both of them. There's a spot on some of the cages where they meet the main pedal body and are almost crimped slightly. Both sets of pedals failed at that point under average riding conditions (not "just riding along" but not cx riding and nowhere near race conditions).

I have speedplay frogs on all of my bikes except the cyclocross bike- which has eggbeaters. I generally think the frogs are better pedals but in the extremely muddy cross conditions out here the eggbeaters are the only pedals that don't jam.

LOVE my eggbeaters. That said, I've only heard very wonderfully positive things about ATACs. Folks swear by them, just like I do my eggbeaters. I bet you can't go wrong either way!

I have had Time Atac Alium's for 5 years on my cross bike. Never a single problem.
