My Butt Is Killing Me !!!

well i think i screwed myself and was wondering if this has happend to anyone else , i have not ridden my cx bike for 2 weeks , about 3 weeks ago i had been riding for 12 straight long days , aprox 30 miles each day or more , after a bout a week i felt an iritation near my dignity & butt , each day it got worse to the point i went to the emergency room and they had to cut it open dig it out and stuf it with gauze & antibiodics , it was the size of a golf ball and it was the most painfull thing ever , i had to go back 3 days later for the same thing the dr. called it an absest , i have been on 2 antibiodic + pain killer , imnoew feeling better but im kinda freaked out to ride and have it come back , i washed all my clothing after each ride :(

Abcess, AKA saddle sores. Sometimes people just explode, spontaneous human combustion.

Could be caused by an ingrown hair, infected zit, any number of relatively gross but not abnormal things. Best advice is to treat it before it gets that bad. Ask your doctor what to do when you feel it coming on.

In addition to washing the gear regularly it's good to have a couple different brands, styles of shorts and swap them to move the irritation.

I've never been "blessed" as you but know guys who have and these are things they've discussed.

ouch ?

Could changing the saddle do anything to help?
From what I understood about saddle sores is that its no different than an 'ASS BLISTER'

is that wrong?

I figure it like any workout... it hurts massage it... or have some one work out the kinks for you. But I agree on the getting a trained physician to look at it first.

Funny how we will trust word of mouth first from a secondary source instead of usually going to the doc first. I geuss it's just because so many of us have been misdiagnosed before and don't trust a doctor. But they are like us, they may know a lot and may have seen a lot... BUT THEY DON'T ALWAYS KNOW EVERYTHING !!!

Glad to hear you are feeling better, if it keeps up tho... I would quite the riding, or if I wanted to endure, I would just simply change my riding style.

Best of Luck !!!

Honey, I have a HUGE favor to ask you... :-D

Raceline, I hope you're doing okay and that it doesn't happen again. And I hope I never have to deal with one...

Saddle Sore or Pilonidal Abcess?

Do you remember if the Doc called it Saddle Sores or a Pilonidal Abcess?

Pilonidal Abcesses were documented back in the 1940's as "Jeep Disease" due to the fact that it was most commonly found in enlisted men who were riding across dirt roads in bouncing army jeeps all day. It is present, yet dormant, in about 1/5th of the population as a cyst at the base of the spine/tailbone (aka top of your crack), and only becomes infected or inflamed when aggrivated by constant pressure, a hard fall, or infections such as ingrown hairs or bacteria from unwashed cycling shorts.

If this is what the Doc said, try using Tea Tree Oil. I know it sounds like hippie-homeopathic-mojo, but the natural antibacterial and antiseptic characteristics of the tea tree oil will protect your sensitive undercarriage. It is readily available in some supermarkets and drugstores, usually in the vitamin or organic section of the store. It's small, easy to apply, and it smells great too. Quick fix, preventative measure, pleasant scent!
