I need to get a front brake cable hanger with more stem clearance (I actually want to take out the bottom spacer and get the stem even lower):



I know of two solutions...

Interloc Deep Drop Hanger (1.5" drop):




Tektro Fork Crown Mounted Hanger:



Any reason to go with one over the other? Same difference?

Only advantage the steerer type gives you is that it can act as a spacer under your stem. Also give a bit cleaner look.

Well, some have claimed that the fork-crown cable stop reduces or eliminates brake chatter.

I can't personally vouch for this.

From "testing" in bike stores, the fork-crown cable stop appears to flex slightly under heavy pressure from the brake lever. I was unable to discern any flex from the steerer hanger.

That said-- the flex will have negligible effect on stopping power.

One nice advantage of the fork-crown stop is that you can adjust your handlebar height without having to readjust the brake cable. Nice indeed.

I looked more closely at my set up, and I think the fork-mounted hanger will work better. With a negative rise stem and no spacers, even the deep-drop steerer-mounted hanger looks like it would make the cable clearance a bit tight. With the fork-mounted hanger, it won't be an issue. Agreed, it won't look as clean, but I can deal.

My '07 Redline came with the fork mounted one, and after pad adjustment (I had them way messed up to start...) I have virtually no fork chatter problems. Plus it really doesn't look any worse than a silly tightly-bent cable trying to get to that steerer-mounted one.

About the brake chatter thing... I've heard several times that the fork-mounted hanger helps prevents this. How does that work???

I suspect that it has something to do with the extra flex of the fork-mounted hanger vs. the steerer mounted hanger. The extra (tiny) bit of flex afforded by the fork-mounted hanger damps the vibration of the cantilever arms and fork under braking.

Interesting.

So, before I spend $9 to ship a $15 part that weighs as much as a pen (Harris Cyclery), does anyone know any other place, online or otherwise, that might have this available? I called a couple of LBSs, and they don't seem to find it in their catalogs. I'm in S. California.

When the fork flexes it stretches the brake cable with a steerer type hanger. This creates another feedback path. If the resonant frequency of brake chatter is the same as that of the fork-cable interaction, it creates a problem. Loose headsets can make the fork-cable interaction even more pronounced.

Weird-- i walked into a local bike shop and got a fork-crown cable stop for $5.99!

Check around with your local shops. Somebody has one! If not, ask if they buy from QBP-- this is the wholesale company that supplies many many shops. If so they can order you the part and shouldn't charge shipping since it'll come with their next order of innertubes and other stuff.

If a 07 Redline came with one then SBS (Seattle Bike Supply) will surely have it. SBS distributes for Redline.

Thanks for the advice on sourcing the hanger. I called about 4 or 5 bike shops locally, and none could find it in their QBP catalog. The SBS catalog online does list the hanger, but before I could find a shop that was an SBS dealer, I actually found a shop that had the item in stock. Thanks, again.

Just an update...

The shop that said they had the fork-mounted hanger, actually didn't have the right part when I showed up. Had to call about 4-5 more shops and finally tracked one down. (BTW, most were unable/reluctant to order from SBS, which carries the Tektro hanger).

The part I found was actually branded Suntour, although it looks seemingly identical to the Tektro unit, as far as I can tell. The bolt was barely long enough for my fork, but works. And yes, brake chatter has been eliminated.

Not sure if Redlines were always this way, but the current models come w/ this set-up. I bought mine as a frame only, so it didn't have it.

Ive used both types on my cross check (commuter bike) with several different brakes.

I have to say the fork mount cable stop works much better on my set up than the steer tube hanger did.

I switched brakes several times while using the steer tube cable hanger

tektro oryx

paul neo front and stop light rear

and finaly shimano BR550

I had chatter with all untill I installed the crown cable hanger

Now I only get squeal but no chatter or heavy vibration.


PS the paul Neo retro worked great after I installed the fork cable stop but I changed them due to lack of power from the hoods when in traffic. shimanos much better though not much clearance .


also using the fork mount cable stop made it much easier to mount lights and bags...

I was experimenting with these a while back on my cross-check, which annoyingly doesn't have a rear cable stop. I mounted it to the rear caliper brake bridge, along with a Jagwire "Mickey" barrel adjuster (which is designed to slip into braze-on cable stops like a housing ferrule would), and it worked well though I was a little nervous about the amount it flexed during braking. I'm not sure if this was due to the frame or the cable hanger flexing.

One nice thing about using it on the front is that it gives you more room to insert an inline barrel adjuster if you're so inclined. On the other hand, if you're running a wide-profile canti, like a Paul Neo-Retro, I don't know if you'd have enough clearance with this setup to run a high straddle wire.
