Found two punks eyeing my bike at 5 a.m. this morning as I was leaving the gym. They said they were members, and were just finishing their smoke before entering; SURE, Buddy!!! I only have $500 invested in this winter commuter, but more than that in my spring and summer Cannondale. What is the best lock to use for deterring punks trying to steal a bike? I don't know how safe the lock I presently have is with this bike, and especially with my fair-weather bike.

I have a big-ass Kryptonite--I think it's the urban series.

It seems pretty bulletproof--I imagine it would put up enough resistance to discourage most thieves.

I dont know where you are in CA, but I would invest in a NYC Krypto (I have used one for years as a courier using the key thousands of times and have had pretty good luck) https://www.kryptonitelock.com/inetis...s_item&pgrp=20
. Also if you do not have your seat and wheels locked down or secure somehow, I would get a set of Locking Skewers . Also make sure you lock to something secure. A sign-post wont always do it, and I try to avoid them.

I use the NYC kryptonite chain for the front wheel and the frame and a kryptonite u lock for the back wheel and back part of the chain.

Any way you can check with your club and see if they'll let you keep the bike inside the building, then you can lock it to the inside stairs or something (I assume your club has stairways inside the building, of course...)?

Koffe...That is like an extra 6lbs you are carying with you. Chi-town is tough and all, but damn. When I was in philly I had a nyc ulock for the rear wheel and frame and a locking skewer for the front.

How much should I spend for the NYC "U" lock. I hear they are not cheap. I did discuss the possiblity of keeping my new bike indoors with my gym owner. He said, since I'm there so early, it wouldn't be a problem. I will still lock it up inside, even though many eyes watch the door. Thanks,

either way Another vote for the NYchain. Worn over the sholder it really doesn't weigh that much. For long lock ups bring my front wheel back lock it, the rear wheel, frame, and bike rack. One tip: if you lock the lock to your saddle you don't have to take the seat and it makes it hard for theives to get at it.

usually performance (devil to shop guys, but good for the broke bike folks) has some sort of deal on NYC u-locks or chains. With my NYC chain, I would wear it around my waist. Since my waist is larger than others, I used an old tube and caribener to make up for the extra 3 or 4 inches. It makes it much quicker to get off too!

I am telling you guys....locking skewers are the way to go, but I am a sales person in an urban shop. I always tell people that to save their stuff and not have to carry around extra stuff.

Stickerguy, no. These two were casing out the gym parking lot. The owner told me this morning that he received calls from a few members reporting that two young men on bikes were looking into cars and riding through the parking lot around 4:30 a.m.; this was right before they were casing out my winter commuting baby. So I think it is safe to say that these two were up to no good. Tell, me: does a U lock fit nicely around the neck of a young punk? I mean, I don't want his head to accidentally slip out of the lock and bounce along the pavement as I drag him through the parking lot.

yes a u-lock would fit around a punk's neck. I read about a guy who locked himself to a sign in order to avoid getting arrested by cops. They un bolted the sign and hauled both in. CRAZY!!

A guy at work keeps his ny lock on the bike rack and just carries his u-lock around for shorter errands.
