Cyclocross and Gravelbiking (Recreational) This has to be the most physically intense sport ever invented. It's high speed bicycle racing on a short off road course or riding the off pavement rides on gravel like :The Dirty Kanza". We also have a dedicated Racing forum for the Cyclocross Hard Core Racers.

Over the past two years, I have been inadvertantly collecting a pile of cyclocross stuff. I don't go looking for it, I just wind up with it. Last winter, a Fondriest CX frame showed up at the local bike-co-op with the left rear canti stud dislodges (looked like forcibly with a hammer). I am guessing that it is mid-90's as it is steel, threaded 1-inch fork, and the only thing it came with was a Shimano 600 headset. Grayjay brased the stud back on (and did a fine job!) back on, so I am now somewhat obligated to give this CX thing a try (it is the only racing I have never done). So here it is, Jersey suede over the frame repair. The only new parts bought for this project are the tires.

Frame/fork: Steel Fondriest of some type (1990's?)
Shimano 600 front/Dura Ave 7403 rear 36H laced to NOS Super Champion tubular rims
Tires: Challenge 34mm sew-ups of some sort
Shimano 600 headset with 3T stem and Salsa Bell Lap bars, shellac'd cotten over cork bar tape.
Shimano 600 RD with 8-speed 600 brifters, 11-30 cluster, no front derailleur
Old SR crank with chain-guard and 40T ring, Shimano 600 BB (Italian...I actually found a NOS in the barn)
Ritchey Logic (Dia Compe) cantilever brakes with Tekro interupter levers.
Sakae 27.2 seatpost with San Marcos saddle of little repute.
Shimano M324 platform/clipless pedals because I rarely use them and I am not very good at clipping in on the run.

I plan on giving it a good shake-down ride tomorrow once the tires have had more time to dry. First race is saturday.

How did the race go?
Race is saturday. My first goal is make it past the shake-down run tomorrow (commute). I have some front brake chatter and hope it calms down once the new pads settle into the new brakes. The fork is not drilled, so I have few options for chatter reduction is limited to lousy brake pads. Goal #2 is to survive the CX clinic on Wednesday, Goal #3 is to finish on saturday.

You definitley are going to want an inner chain guide to keep the chain from falling off to the inside. I like N-Gear jumpstop, they are cheap too.

If you can't get one by Sat then just use the FD and use the limit screws to set the position. At this point in the season it shouldn't be muddy enough to cause an issue.

Recent revisions. The homemade derailleur/chainguide didn't fare too well. I also removed a link from the chain, which seemed to help also. I replaced the $17 'el cheapo post with a Zipp Service Course SL unit, with an Arione atop. I see a carbon fork, some Paul brakes, and Chris King Headset, and hubs laced to some Velocity Major Toms in it's near future. Still haven't raced yet, but maybe this weekend. I really want to watch the Nasa National Championships at Mid Ohio this weekend, but if it is raining, I am going to race my bike instead.

I bet she is a blast to ride. Can't wait to see what she weighs. I weighed my Redline today. I was a bit disappointed. It was 20.06lbs, with my Garmin 500 on it. That gives me something to work for however. I've already figured out a pretty basic low budget plan to extract 4lbs off of it. lol.

Noice bike. Doing Jackson Park? I'm going hang gliding that day, so I'm going to miss the opening race.
