Cyclocross and Gravelbiking (Recreational) This has to be the most physically intense sport ever invented. It's high speed bicycle racing on a short off road course or riding the off pavement rides on gravel like : "Unbound Gravel". We also have a dedicated Racing forum for the Cyclocross Hard Core Racers.

My 1st build is fender friendly, my next build will be CF frame without eyelets. Lol
I have my custom Nemesis Project Quicksilver fixie for sale, to put towards this build, & for upgrades on my Rad Jake.
Things we do to stay "relevant"

My new Ridley X-Ride. SKS guards and W100 studded tires on it at the moment to hit the slick bike paths in Minneapolis. Looking forward to the set up flexibility this bike gives me.

"monster cross" converted 1988 Univega Alpina Pro - with Origin8 Gary 2 dirt drop bar

2010 Motobecane Fantom Cross Uno - sporting a Midge On-One bar in this pic but I've already installed a Gary 2 bar as well

What care the specs for the tires on both rigs?

The MTB has Kenda K838 26x1.95 and the SS has Kenda Kwick 700x30

I'm actually looking to change up the tires on both of these bikes.. the K838 are great for mixed terrain but they are heavy and not very supple. I have the same tires on my 1986 Diamondback Apex which is used for grocery getting and hauling and I like them a lot for that bike. But I feel like they are slowing me down on the drop bar mtb

The 700x30 Kenda Kwicks are ok but I'd like to try a fatter, fully slick tire since I ride mostly on the road. 30mm isn't too bad but being used to mtb tires, i feel a little less confident smashing through the streets, especially with the skinny rims

I was thinking they looked a little thin for MX.(42mm min for MX.)
I run 40's(works out to 41 on my rims) on my JTS, & 34 on my Sentiero.
Trying to turn one of my CXers into a MX, just trying to figure out if i'm going to go with a 29er setup or stick with 700.

30mm is plenty for road use, I run 28mm road tires on my CXer when the sun is out.
My roadie is running 23mm, but I have a set of 25mm on hand if I know the road is rough.

i was referring to the mountain bike when i said monster cross (1.95" is ~50mm) but i don't race or anything. i just like being able to ride in the city without having to worry about the terrain

Still more of a hardtail with drops, than a MX.

I like them both whatever anyone calls them!

What shifters are you using on the Univega? Thinking about gearing up my "monster crossed" Miyata.

Deore (MT-60) thumb shifters. They have steel clamps so I was able to get them on a road bar even though they are meant for a flat bar.

I like thumb shifters in general but I tend to ride in the drops on the mtb so I'm considering going with Kelly Take-offs or brifters to allow shifting from the drops more easily. also have considered going the SS route (mostly to see how light i can get the build )

Finally have the finishing touches put on my Van Dessel. Ten speed 105 drivetrain with DuraAce shifters. Weighs in at 23 pounds. A little porky but not bad...it's a beefy frame!

oh so sweet....

I've got about 8 rides on this new frame and could not be happier.

Bruce Gordon Rock and Roads got their inaugural ride today and I'm very impressed.

My Trek Ion, currently set up as a commuter/trekker. Compact Apex crank, 25mm Gatorskins, Brooks Swallow, Cygolite, and fenders round out the major additions.
I just switched out the studded tires and of course, it dumps snow...

Haven't been able to ride my Traitor since it got icy and nasty out. Today I had the day off and had the hankering to go for a ride on it; so I popped the studded tire off my mtb and stuffed it on the front of the cxb. The 2.1 inch tire was pretty tight, but it worked perfectly through all of the ice, snow, and slush I rode through today.

This pic is from a frozen lake in Mpls. The guy in the background is kite snowboarding (or whatever that's called). Pretty badass!

I've been looking for a cross bike to use as an all around type of ride. You know, good for winter weather road riding with lots of fender clearance, the occasional gravel trail through a park, etc. Just all around fun. I've been eyeing this 2012 Focus Mares AX 2.0 at my favorite LBS for months. The other day I was in there picking up some parts and started talking to the owner about this bike. It was his last 2012 and he REALLY needed it to go away to make room for the pile of 2013 bikes he has on the way. He knew I'd been drooling over it so he said he'd make me a good deal on it. Well, I couldn't pass it up (only after getting the OK from my amazingly tolerant wife).
