Conbon - Tell me more about the Crux. Did you strip the paint yourself?

conbon 02-19-12 11:00 PM

No, the previous owner did. It used to be stinky pink, and the fork still had factory paint when I bought it. I got frame, fork, headset, seatpost, and clamp for $50. I wasn't really looking to build a cross bike, but for that price I could pass it up. A few hundred dollars later, a local bike swap sale, and sweet talking the manager of my favorite lbs into letting me use a stand, I ended up here!

Thanks Icy and Andy. It's a budget bike, but actually looks pretty rad and rides real well.

I think I'll always have a Cross-Check, they're just so useful to have around!

So I decided to try some cross riding this year. I thought it would be nice to be able to ride in the crappy weather and on rough roads/trails where you couldn't take a road bike. So that said I didn't want to spend a fortune. This is what it looked like when I picked it up. I've upgraded all the parts to 105 now. It's a fun ride that's not too heavy. I don't know that I'd race cx but it's great fun so far.

Picked up my Specialized Crux Disc Apex Friday. I am going to use it as a drop bar hybrid road bike. Swapped the CX tires out for some Bontrager hardcase slicks and moved the Brooks seat over from my hybrid. I know putting Bontrager tires on a Specialized bike is sacrilege, so I'll likely swap the tires off my Trek hybrid and put the near new Michelin Pilot Sports on the Crux. Replaced the 11/28 cassette with a 11/32. Road 25 miles Friday and it was good. Have to get in drop bar shape though. I did 36 miles today and was much more tired than the same distance on the hybrid. I almost feel like I'm starting over :)http://bikeforums.net/attachment.php...hmentid=238636

pretty stoked about it being back together now.

FSA omega compacts, FSA SL-K cantis and SRAM carbon levers are the only component changes from last year. new bartape/cables/tires.

Just finished building up the replacement for my previous bike (see thread: "The Death of Strawberry Shartcake" for details)
Here's what I replaced it with; 2011 Redline Conquest Pro... most of the components were direct transfer. Needed new headset and bottom bracket. SRAM Red cranks and Soulcraft tensioner are the big differences aside from the frameset.
I did some masking/paint work to turn the stock red accents into pink to match my team colours.

The new ride, same as the old ride. Replaced old frame with newer model and kept parts I could. Only complaint is with internal headset, wanted to keep the CK one.
Planet X Uncle John frame. New parts 105 hubs/open pros, slx rear, 105 front, ultegra 10 speed, sram casette, shimano cx crank, ultergra b/b, cowbell bars. Months of online and c-list hunting payed off.

Used year round to commute and lots of singletrack, can fit a 42 up front and a narrow 42 in back. Basically have stopped riding my mtb offroad, hence to mini-v's. Plan on cx races again this year, and of course next months PAris to Ancaster.

So, like me you decided to add new parts just ahead of P2A this year. I think my chain or rear deraileur ever forgave me for making their maiden ride the P2A last year.
