Hello guys. I want to buy a Cyclocross bike for fun and commuting. I've made some research and now I need to choose between two models: Jake the Snake and DeVinci Tosca Sl2.

The JTS is a well known bike and seems to have a good fanbase. DeVinci bikes are much less common out of Quebec. Actually it's built in my hometown of Chicoutimi, less than 10 minutes away from my house. Can't buy more local, although it isn't my top priority. I'm no expert but seems to me the specs of both bike are equivalent. Not sure about the geometry of the Tosca SL2. Seems like a shorter bike somehow . Good buddy of mine and a real bike junkie tells me to take the Tosca for it's better frame (DeVinci cyclocross frames are welded here in CHicoutimi). He's probably right on that, but I won't put the bike to such intense use as to break an aluminum frame (ironically, this friend main bike is a older JTS that he rides everyday for commuting and training!)

As for looks, I use to like the tosca sl2 better, but the 2010 JTS blue is growing up on me.
The JTS is also 100$ cheaper. I'm leaning toward the Kona right now. I'd appreciate any help taking the good decision.

I like the JTS but that's only because the name DeVinci reminds me of white van speakers so I couldn't see myself riding a bike with the same name.

I have the JTS and I love it to death, but the only thing that's stock on the whole thing is the headset.

If it were me I'd probably go with the DeVinci if only to support Canadian business. Although the fact that it comes with SPD clips and could accommodate disc brakes doesn't hurt either.

I didn't know the Tosca could accommodate disc brakes. How do you know that Jabba? And forgive my ignorance but what are SPD clips?

One important thing I didn't mention is that I have a much better support at the shop selling the Kona with very friendly and informative sellers while the place selling the DeVinci is really so-so..

Just from the bosses on the fork. I don't see anything on the rear though, so it might be the front-only for some reason. And I meant SPD pedals, which are clipless, so I was way off. :s

That would probably be enough to tip me to the JTS. The components are very similar. I like the wheels, tires and brakes better on the JTS. The DeVinci crankset is better geared for road riding, but I like the FSA crank on the JTS.

I would go with the devincy and honnestly, I would make the travel to montreal to get the bike (well around montreal) i am pretty sure youll pay far less over here, theres a shop in laval where they had a 2009 tosca last week when i was looking for a bike for my girlfriend's dad, marked down to 645$

I tend to agree with AndyK and I think I will go with the JTS unless I can find a deal on a Tosca SL2. Sunstealth, you're probably right, there's got to be better deals in the big city on last year bikes...

update: went to a local shop, you probably could get a norco CCX2 for 550$/600$ or so

edit; i forgot its the orange 2007 model they have hanging by the window.

They make some bike frames at Chicoutimi, but the DeVinci website describe the Tosca as assembled in Canada which doesnt sound like frame manufacture. like the look of the DeVinci.

From what I heard, cyclocross frames and high-end road alumium frame are still built in Chicoutimi, but I would need to confirm this.
