Cyclocross and Gravelbiking (Recreational) This has to be the most physically intense sport ever invented. It's high speed bicycle racing on a short off road course or riding the off pavement rides on gravel like : "Unbound Gravel". We also have a dedicated Racing forum for the Cyclocross Hard Core Racers.

if you pass the pit and then have a problem, can you run backwards on the course or do you have to go all the way around until you come the pit again?

yeah, the pit is great if you've got two bikes and someone waiting in there to do handoffs, and wash and fix your bike while you're on the course. but if you have a mechanical on the course that prevents you from riding, you're likely to be pretty much done as far as finishing as well as you would've, especially if you don't have those things.

there is something to be said for finishing anyway, i've run about 7/8 of a lap before just to grab my pit bike and finish 1 lap down.

So there is no crossing the course to get to the pit if you flat or something?

Nope. You have to follow the course all the way around to the pit.

If the course is set up well, you'll pass the pit at least twice, so at least you only have to run half the course. No matter though, not a lot of fun either way. I got a flat on the last lap of a race last year, had to run much of that lap, got passed by 5 or 6 guys, which sucked, dropped from about 4th to 9th or so. Part of the deal.

To clarify - I believe it's only if you have passed the EXIT of the pit - then you have to go back around. But if you realize there's a problem after the entrance and before the exit you can enter and go where needed to exchange bikes. This makes a difference at the big races with looong pits but no so much at the local events.
