Going Vintage for the Halloween Race
 

Here is a vintage I have no idea what the make is single speed cross bike. Great lug work. 27in wheels. Wide flange sunshine hubs and weinmann concave rims. Plan to race in astoria oregon at the next cross race with road levers and another brake of course. Representing the beginning of cyclocross the best I can for halloween. Not very many pictures of what the bicycles looked like in the beginning. So I found the oldest one I could. It was covered in rust. Found in what the owner called his bicycle boneyard in a field behind his house.

Very nice. I love the brakes. Vintage center pulls. I will put my cross bars and road levers on it soon. Great work.

Cool. I'll be around both days, racing beginner (and maybe single speed on Sunday). Depending on when you see me, I'll either look like this, this or this.

I saw your bike it is awsome. I think you must have been in registration. I had to get in a practice lap. Maybe I will catch you at the next race. How did you like the course?

Yeah. I saw your bike when I was going into registration, but you were gone by the time I came out. I should have done a pre-ride myself. I spent the first lap taking the worst possible line everywhere, but I just could not keep my wheels underneath me the whole race.

I liked the course a lot. I would have liked to have done it later in the day when they started playing with the coffins. They were just putting them out when I passed the barriers on the last lap. I think I was the first person of the day to get to hurdle one though.

The climbs weren't as bad on Sunday as they were on Saturday. which was good for those of us on singlespeeds. I rode my Kona Jake on Saturday and it was definitely a better bike for the course. The Michelin Mud2's handled the mud so much better than the Maxxis Locust CX on my Gitane, and it was nice to have gears for the hills.

How did you do? What gear ratio did you use?

I loved the course but unfortunetly I was having mechanical issues the whole race. I need to do some work to my chain line. I thought it was straight but a couple of my friends looked at it and said that it was off a little. So I need to take it in a bit up front. Other than that the bike did great it was my first race on a single speed. The only problem I had with the course was that first muddy hill section. But it was disappointing having problems with my chain. It was impossible to catch up after it continued to walk off. I ended up running the last half of the course because I was so sick of fixing it. My preride it didn't fall off once.

I was running a 39x16 which might have been a bit much. I could handle it the whole race except for that hill. Are you racing in PIR next week? I am going to race the single again after I do some work to it. I did definetly get some looks at my bike like WTF is that.

I was using 39x18, and I thought that was higher than I would have liked. I was able to ride the whole course, but there were a couple of places where I was barely going fast enough to keep the bike upright.

I felt like I did really badly Sunday after doing relatively well on Saturday, but I finished right around the same people I usually do, so who knows. They just had a bigger gap on me than usual I guess. When I got to the long straightaway before the finish, there was no one in sight ahead of me. I was really glad when Jay passed me there -- I was afraid I was going to have to do another lap. ;)

I am planning on racing at PIR, but I think I'll probably be riding my Jake. If the course is flat enough I might come back out for the singlespeed race with the Gitane. Otherwise, I could be the only person in the beginner race with a pit bike. :D

By the way, I like your bike too. The chrome on your fork looks a lot better than mine. Did you have that redone? It doesn't look like something you'd find in a boneyard.

Yeah I might take my other bike as well. I have a specialized hybrid that I converted for cross. It is a single in front with 7 in back. It works well. I did great on the alpenrose race with it. I have missed a couple races fighting a cold. I used steel wool and polish on the forks. Luckily compared to the rest of the bikes the chrome was in good shape.

My chrome is flaking badly, but you saw what the paint looks like, so I guess it kind of matches. I just need some obviously mismatched chrome paint to slap on the bare spots like I did with the blue paint on the rest of the frame.

I noticed a Univega and something else of similar age over by the barriers. It has me wondering how many vintage bikes were out there.

I know. I saw a vintage Peugeot at Alpenrose. I love the vintage bikes my self. My road bike is a 1965 vikiing. There is nothing better than feeling your spine seperate during a race on some old vintage steel. Seriously though. Maybe they need a vintage class. That would be pretty interesting.
