anyone else have problems with eggbeaters?
 

I have some eggbeaters that i got a few weeks ago. I have no problems getting out of them, it's getting in that i have a problem with. In todays race there was a set of barriers that immediately turned down a hill that went right back up a rutted singletrack (with no flats). And i could not for the life of me get into the clips on 4 of the 6 laps, so going up the steep hill, the roots ended upknocking my feet off of the pedals causing me to have to jump off and run the rest of the hill that ended up going BACK down again down a very rooty singletrack (causing similar problems).

I never had this problem with the SPD mtn bike pedals i had (now my wife has). I even saw some of the A racers with EB's having a hard time. Is there something with these pedals, or is it just rider proficiency? They do seem like a very popular pedal of course.

They take a little getting used to. You kind of have to roll into them to clip in. Put the toe of your shoe on top of the pedal and roll forward. Once you figure it out, they're super easy to get into and out of.

Which model did you get? I bought one pair each of 2's and 3's a month or so ago. I was having a heck of a time getting clipped in with the 2's, which I put on my main race bike -- with the same cleats and shoes that were working fine on three other bikes. For a while I thought it was my imagination and dismissed it.

Today's race had a run up with a quick turn around and a ride down the same slope, so a clean clip-in was critical. Happily, I pre-rode the course yesterday and knew this was going to be there. So, last night I switched pedals and put the 3's on this bike. Absolutely no problems! I was getting clean, consistent clip-ins all over the course.

I can't really explain this. I was playing with it last night, and it seems like the spring on the 2's is tighter than on the 3's (and much, much tighter than the spring on my circa 2007 Egg Beater C's). I'm going to send an e-mail to Crank Brothers this week and see what they make of it.

i got the 1's to give em a shot this year... didn't want to spring >$100 for the 3's if i was going to hate it. I will try my dad's 2's to see if it's different.

yes, the problem is that they break.

The shim makes a huge difference for float, and I can imagine that also making a difference for clipping in.

The shim can make a huge difference --- especially if your shoes are new. Last week, I couldn't dismount for the life of me... every time, my left foot go stuck on the pedal (not good at full speed). Turned out there was just so much rubber around it... it needed too much force to apply naturally with the dismount flick. Added the shims this week ---- totally fixed..... no dismount problems at all.

... though i supposed that doesnt help with clipping back in. I'm pretty bad at that too... Just takes getting used to... start pedaling and don't think about... 3 or 4 turns and you'll probably be locked in.

shims are good. put em on. other than that it just takes practice getting to know where exactly the cleat is on your shoe. Race anxiety also can ad to problems. i rode them in some thick mud today since it rained here in socal and had some trouble but it was from the mud on the shoe not the cleat. other than that you just need to get your muscle memory to know where the cleat is on the shoe.

Had them, took too long to lock in so I bought a pair of Look's, could not be happier.

I have the same experience. I've had serious issues clipping back in with eggbeaters and think i'm going to switch back to my spd's and give the eggbeaters away.

I wasn't a fan...I still use them but only if necessary. I'm much happier with the Time Atac's.
