Cyclocross and Gravelbiking (Recreational) This has to be the most physically intense sport ever invented. It's high speed bicycle racing on a short off road course or riding the off pavement rides on gravel like : "Unbound Gravel". We also have a dedicated Racing forum for the Cyclocross Hard Core Racers.

is this a respectable cross bike?

I'm seriously thinking bout buying the new 05 Trek XO 1 at my LBS, they have it in stock and there are quite a bit of upgrades on the 05 from the 04 which seems to make it much more race worthy, so question is, is the trek X0 1 considered a worthy cross race bike? I know that is in the whole looks category, but hey, looks is 25% of the sport. (don't quote me on this lol)

it think it looks pretty good, certainly enough to get into racing. the only thing i don't like is the alu fork. for the money they should have a carbon one in the package.

A friend of mine says that the Treks handle like pigs. That is why you can always find used ones on eBay. So they're not race-worthy in his opinion anyway, and he is quite the grouch. But maybe they have fixed them. I wouldn't buy it without a through test ride that includes dismounts and all that. Nice parts are one thing but if the frame sucks, you need a new bike.
