Tubular deal - 35$ for Vittorias?
So just browsing through PBK stuff before I placed an order and I noticed they had some tubular CX tires on the cheap. It seems odd to me that the usual 32mm version are regular priced (with normal MSRP of 90ish), yet the 34mm version MSPR was only 42.... and then with the usual PBK discount +10% off code less than $35 a tubular tire.
Now, they both seem to be 320 TPI (I know previous versions were different rubber and 290 TPI), so they should be the same year make. The only difference aside from the width, is it mentions a removable valve stem on the 32 version, but doesnt mention on the 34.... although the picture does show the red valve stem, which is typically removable on a vittoria.
https://www.probikekit.com/us/tyres-t...tyre-34mm.html
Are they selling these cheaper because UCI doesnt allow 34 width? (I was never measured last year... and heck, Im not at nationals or anything)
I bought a set just as a backup in case I flat my Schwables.....
I ran some of the 290 tpi XMs last year and they were nice in the grass, but not enough knobbies in the deep mud.... decent enough tire for the price though. I dont have the pockets of cash like my teammates who flat 100$ tires every other week.

Maybe they are over the new UCI max. width? I saw the same ad, and considered them, but there are few reviews on the web...

Yea, I assumed they are over the width.... but on the local scene, everyone rides 34s anyhow. What more suprised me was that the MSRP was so dang low... almost half the price of the 32's. Why would Vittoria make the same tire in two sizes with a huge price difference.

I'm skeptical of the accuracy of the description. If you look at the CX tubulars available at Ben's Cycle you'll see that they have a set of Vittoria's that match the name on PBK for $48 and a bunch of others for around twice that. The difference seems to be that the cheaper ones have a lower TPI count (120 vs. 320). The PBK description claims 320 so it's either a screaming deal or someone is confused.

vittoria website doesnt even show that they make any low count TPI tubulars. but at that price with that MSRP its either mislisted or mispriced.
Ive never had to deal with returns to PBK :\ hopefully they send whats listed.... if not all I can do is gripe and ask for store credit or something... Dont want to think about return shipping. My last order from them came in about 4 days. Illl let you know what I get when it arrives.

The width seems right and matches other 34's I have. Does look a little shorter in height than a challenge/dugast/fmb. I don't have a set mounted though to tell for sure. Just eyeballing.
At the very least, it should make a good training tire.

any input on these tires? Price looks right, considering these vs grifo's. I have a wheelset with tufo prestige's for the wife, and I am looking for a tire for me... first set of tubulars, and i will only run 1 set for this year, so looking for a midwest all-rounder

The tread is practically the same as the Grifos but from what I have read the vittorias should be much more durable. Challenge sometimes has issues with the tread coming unglued from the casing.

Just got my tires. Like the OP mine were black tread w/ black sidewalls, 320 TPI casing, and Vittorias Red removable valve stem. Deal of the month! I work at a bike shop and these tires would have cost me like $45 a piece with my employee discount.

Unless you are racing official uci races as an elite/pro, you got nothing to worry about.

I have sets of both the vittoria evo XG that are couple years old 220 tpi model labeled as 32mm. When I use calipers to measure, fully inflated they only measure as 30.0mm at the carcass and 30.5mm to outside of the lugs. I would really appreciate it if someone could get accurate measurements of the "34mm" XG tires. I rather suspect that they might actually be under to 33mm UCI limit which would actually be a bummer for me because I would like to get a set of true 34mm tubies.

After riding these tires for a while i have to say, though they are very supple, i find them not to have enough traction. There just aren't enough side knobs on them. I live in a pretty dry and sandy area and in corners where i wasn't washing out before on my clinchers i was on these. And i was running much lower pressure than i had before in the clinchers. If your races are mainly grass then these are probably fine but if it gets loose whatsoever you are going to be wishing for more bite.

ive been racing them in the Seattle and MFG cyclocross series. We have mixtures of sand, grass, mud, dirt. I dont feel there has been any lacking of traction limiting my racing, although I am just a cat 3. However, we have not gotten to the point of the season when it turns real wet and downright muddy slopfests.

i dont have calipers, however I will say that they are narrow enough for USAC events (35mm I believe) as I raced, but wouldnt fit in the calipers for the UCI race (33mm I believe), although I wasnt going to race this one - Wellens beat Trebon that day.

For the majority of riders 34mm tires will not only be fine in a legal racing perspective but also offer you a better ride. I would say absolutely go for it.
