1st cyclocross bike, brake post problem & brake noise
1st cyclocross bike, I'm an experienced mechanic but not with cyclocross bikes.
I just finished building the bike from frame up. Other than the handlebars, seat, seat post, and brakes, it's a new build. I have a pair of used Cannondale cantilever brakes with black KoolStop brake pads that still have a lot of life in them. Before I put them on, I cleaned the surfaces with a file. The bike has 3 rides on it.
1) My front brake did not work, no tension to pull back one arm, after looking at it, the round "thing" with the 3 spring holes that goes around the brake post that the spring fits into was spinning. I removed the arm and learned that I could tighten the brake post. I tighten the brake post and the round thing was now not spinning. Is this a common problem? Should the brake post be glued? or do I use the blue or red Loctite? If glue, what type?
2) Once the tension screws are set, does the tension change often and need adjusting?
3) Is there a lot of cable stretch in the beginning where the brakes need adjusting?
4) There is no cable adjusting screw for the rear brake. I asked my LBS to order me inline SRAM cable adjusters. Is this good? Other recommendations? I was going to put it in line by the seat where the housing turns down.
5) I bought a pair of Cannondale cyclocross brakes at a bike flea market. It came with a used pair of black KoolStop brake pads. I've had 3 rides with this bike since the build. The first ride, both brakes made noise. Now only one brake is making noise. Will the brakes quiet or do I need to replace the brake pads. The LBS, a non cyclocross shop, said cantilever brakes always make noise because they vibrate when you are stopping and nothing you can do about it other than angle, toeing, the pads to the front. Would replacing the brake pads help? I would put KoolStop on again.

Go where some one can see the issue, bike shops are good for that.
blind guesses are available here..
like : you did not get the return spring assembled properly
when you put the brake on the bike.
did you use threadlock on the spinning brake anchor ,
assuming it was a screwed in removable boss,
and not one that needs re brazing.
Pictures will help ..
a Bike shop that has been around a while
should understand cantilever brakes
they have been a feature of Touring and Mountain bikes
for a Long time.
