Cyclocross and Gravelbiking (Recreational) This has to be the most physically intense sport ever invented. It's high speed bicycle racing on a short off road course or riding the off pavement rides on gravel like : "Unbound Gravel". We also have a dedicated Racing forum for the Cyclocross Hard Core Racers.

'12 Salsa Chili Con Crosso Vs. '12 Specialized Crux Comp Apex Disc

Getting my first cyclocross soon and debating the merits of the above. Planning on getting a second front gear on the Salsa to level the playing field if thats the direction I go. Use would be for recreational trail riding in CO, commuting and racing for fun (in that order). The Salsa is a couple lbs lighter out of the box but lacks the disc brakes (and the potential for them as well). Curious on thoughts around this topic. Is this something i really need or a nice luxury? Both the same price. Or any other suggestions as well. Appreciate the help.

I think the 2013 Cannondale CAADX is going to give both a run for their money based upon components. Not sure I can see paying the extra for the Specialized vs the Cannondale IMO. If this is what hits the streets at $1999 MSRP - wait due to Ultegra vs Apex, and price.

I'm sitting it out until the 2013's hit the shelves and since I haven't seen much reason (discount or availability) to move on a 2012. If I was handy - the Motobacane Fantom would be the one, but not sure any LBS's would work on it for me if I needed help since it's mail order.

Thanks for the info. I found each of them for about $1,750 (including the extra gear on the Salsa) at the LBS's so the prices aren't a factor and the CAADX is little over my price range. Probably worth it though. Good point on the '12 vs '13.

When you list "commuting" as one of the intended uses, how heavily do you plan on loading up the bike? Unless you really plan on packing large loads or touring, I'm not sold on the idea that disc brakes are really superior. I equiped my T6 with Avid Shorty Ultimates and I couldn't be happier with braking performance. It took actually riding the bike to convince me that I didn't need discs for recreational and trail riding. Loading it up for touring or heavy commuting, or winter riding, is another story.

Points on the disc brakes are good too. What I'm finding locally is that the bikes with better components are coming with disc. Apex, 105, Ultegra (although the CAADX with 105 is canti's at $1550 MSRP - just not sure you can find one in the size you need out there).

I like the Specialized lines, but have a list of must haves that will help direct me in 2013.
