Help Selelcting A Bike

Greetings all! I have come back to the forums to for assistance in locating a bike!

I gave mountain biking a try, but there were simply not enough trails in my area to justify having one and it was too heavy to use as an everyday bike. I started to look into Hybrids, then road bikes and have finally come to the decision that a cyclocross bike would best suit my needs. I want a bike that will be light on the road as well as responsive, but one I can take down fire trails and similar unpaved roads. One thing that appeals to me a lot is that cyclocross bikes have drop bars and a light frame, but are rigid enough to attach gear for touring; I want to attach my camera gear to go out for shoots.

But enough of the background info, what I really need help in is finding the right bike for me. I want to stay under $1000 and maintain the brand be either Devinci, Jamis, KHS or Opus. This may seem odd, but this stipulation means I can buy the bike new from my local shop, and I can get a bike in the $1200 range because receive a 20-30% discount on items at our local shop. I would have to talk to the shop to see what the specific discounts would be, but here are the bikes I have been looking at:

Devinci Tosca 1
Jamis Nova Race
KHS CX 100
Opus Sequence
Opus Sentiero

**The prices will be updated once my shop responds**

I also found these bikes that may or may not be deals:

Used 2012 Kona Jake - $850
New 2011 Opus Sequence - $950
______________________________________________

So my question is, as of now, which bike is the best regardless of price? Which is the best I can get through my shop, and the best I can get not through my shop. I will be updating this once I figure out the discounted prices, or if the bikes are still available in my size and update the list from there. I appreciate all of your help! I can't wait to ride!

Among those choices I'd probably go with the Jamis Nova Race, unless you want lower gearing in which case I'd make an offer on the Kona Jake (assuming it's the right size). The Devinci Tosca would be my third choice.

I love my Jakes -- I've got a 2008 and a 2013 -- and the triple crankset is nice for general riding. I don't think $850 is a great deal for a used 2012, but if it's in "like new" condition it's probably worth it. You could offer less, of course.

IMO, Tiagra is enough better than Sora that I'd eliminate the bikes with Sora (or 2300) in the same price range. Also 10-speed Tiagra is nicer than 9-speed Tiagra, but not so much nicer that I would let that be the determining factor.

Overall, the Jamis is just a really good value. The disc brakes are nice. It has good drive train components. The geometry is very good. The carbon fork is a bonus.

Thank you! I really appreciate your help and the explanation! What would be a fair price to offer on the Kona Jake? It's shipping to me, so as of now it is $850 shipped. As of now the Jamis Nova Race is what I'm looking at for sure!

Having to get the Jake shipped brings it down a notch in my mind. With shipping included, $850 is a pretty fair price, but you never know what condition it will be in or how it would fit you. That would make me nervous.

I'm hoping to have the discounted prices updated by tomorrow, to give me something to compare to. But speaking purely parts wise it seems the Jamis is the way to go.

Looks like I'm getting the Devinci Tosca 1, is there anything wrong with getting a medium sized bike when I require a large?

Bought the Tosca and it turned out Medium was the perfect size. I can't wait to pick it up and start riding; Tuesday can't come any sooner!
