Cyclocross race volunteer, help.

Notices
Cyclocross and Gravelbiking (Recreational) This has to be the most physically intense sport ever invented. It's high speed bicycle racing on a short off road course or riding the off pavement rides on gravel like : "Unbound Gravel". We also have a dedicated Racing forum for the Cyclocross Hard Core Racers.

Cyclocross race volunteer, help.

Cyclocross race volunteer, help.

I am new to this part of the forum as I am a road cyclist. I chose to put this in the general cyclocross section, not the racing one becuase this really has nothing to do with the race. Anyway, I am volunteering at a race in my city next Sunday most likely as a course marshall. Now, I have never rode or watched cyclocross racing, I know what it is but have no experience in it. Is there anything I should look at/study before the race so that I know what I am doing? I want to make sure I don't screw up the race at all. Thanks.

Red cones on the right, yellow on the left. Make sure the racers don't get lost. Try to keep dogs and small children off the course. I've never done it, but that's my impression of the kind of things course marshals keep straight.

I'm sure the organizer will tell you everything you need to know. You will be a big help, and nobody will notice. Volunteering is thankless work, so let me thank you now on behalf of the racers who don't notice why things go smoothly.

At my very first cyclocross race I was woefully unprepared, sucking wind like a guy in desperate need of an iron lung and just generally making a fool of myself (but having a blast). Everybody watching the race was very supportive, but what I really remember is a course volunteer who pushed me up a hill. I've been hooked on CX ever since.

I agree, it is thankless work, it's too bad that it has to be but that's what makes it so appreciated. Thanks for the advice though, he sent me an email today about going on Wednesday, he is going to set up the course so I am going to try to make it there to hopefully learn a bit about cross. I want to get a bike maybe this year and try it out a bit. Thanks again for the reply!

Thanks, look for the kid who doesn't have a clue what he's doing, that's me. Good luck at the race!

Thanks, look for the guy who has no clue what he's doing; it's only my second race and I got on a cross bike for the first time just a month ago.

That's great, you must love the sport now though eh? I just did my first road race on the 8th of September after about 1.5 years of riding. Racing is a whole new thrill! It's addicting !

Ya it was a great race! I had to get all of the caution tape into one bag from around the course after the race, surprisingly enough, it only took 1 hour to clean the whole place up! I was the guy in the green/white jacket and black pants on the very first (gravel) hill at the start. Did you see me? and XC looks like a ton of fun, how'd you do? You weren't that man in the green horns helmet were ya?
