Should I return this bike?
Hello folks,
I ve been looking for cyclocross bike for the last two month and finally bought one off Ebay for a bit under $900 bucks. Its 2011 GT Type 1 CX (more expensive model). Here is what the seller stated: For Sale is a 2011 GTR Type CX 1 in 54cm size. It has a few small cosmetic scuffs(chainstay, fork). The Bike has around 200 road miles on it. Selling because I am moving in a month and cannot take it with me. Perfect working condition and ready to ride! Here is the pic he posted: https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-T...%257E60_57.JPG First he started demanding more money for shipping. Then after about 3 weeks I finally received the bike. But the bike was missing pedals, those cool bottle cages (not that I care about them, but still), rear derailleur was Apex instead of Rival, real wheel was completely out of true and missing a spoke, bar tape was dirty and he even took off bar end plugs. Plus he changed nice Easton rear skewer for a generic cheap one. The bike is not in bad shape but has way more than 200 miles as he stated. So I got quite upset and tried contacting him, but he didnt bother to respond and offer any solution. I opened Ebay dispute and I am pretty sure Ebay will reverse the transaction. So, I will have the option to send the bike back to the liar. The good part is that the bike itself is pretty light and fast. It has decent components I guess. So I am not sure what to do. What would you guys do in that case? Sounds like the rear wheel is in pretty bad shape; is it even fixable? If not, I'd be sorely tempted to return it or at least get the money for a new one. A wheel is a big part of the value of any bike.

If the bike is otherwise OK, get an official shop estimate on getting the wheel back in service, get prices for the missing cages and pedals online, and calculate the price differential for the Apex vs. Rival RD.
Then in the dispute resolution process demand a credit for the difference between what he advertised and what you got As much as I dislike ebay these days, it's pretty much guaranteed that they'll lean your way, and not his. |
With nine hundred bucks, you could do much better than what you got. Teach the liar a lesson. Rescind the deal and get this one, instead:

I fixed the rear wheel. It was just the spoke. 26 bucks total. I cant see the pedals he had but they look like Shimano's SPD. Long story short he ripped me off by about 100-120 bucks I assume. I ve been an Ebay seller for years and never ever even thought of doing smth. like that. People are nasty nowadays.
Ebay usually just reverses the transaction and I will need to ship the bike back to him. I really liked the bike but I hate when people lie like that. |
Caveat emptor http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Caveat_emptor is double over E Bay..

you win some and you loose some, the bottle cages, pedals, and skewer are pretty trivial. Rear wheel and derailleur are a bummer but it doesnt really sound that bad.
