Cyclocross and Gravelbiking (Recreational) This has to be the most physically intense sport ever invented. It's high speed bicycle racing on a short off road course or riding the off pavement rides on gravel like : "Unbound Gravel". We also have a dedicated Racing forum for the Cyclocross Hard Core Racers.

Universal bike < $2500

Dear all! First of all I want to apologise for my poor english, I am abroad student in UK, from Kazakhstan

I want to replace my MTB and road bikes with 1, all-in-one bike, as I study abroad, but enjoy both: road and mountain biking (and find it unreliable to carry 2 bikes back to home every long holidays).
I am 183cm tall and 62kg

I currently have 2 aluminium Fuji bikes (MTB and road), and want to upgrade to carbon frame (I have heard it is great in high freqency vibration reduction).
I don't know what to look for in CX bikes, and unfortunately I don't have a chance to have a test ride on them.
Research for commond bikes brands, and found those bikes interesting:
Cube Cross Race Pro ~$2250; Ultegra; 8.7kg; German quality, but aluminium frame
Fuji ALTAMIRA CX 2.1 ~$2200; Carbon frame; nice design, 8.57kg, but SRAM Rival (I'm currently riding Shimano 105 on road bike) and Tektro Oryx brakes... after quick research, I found Shorty 6 are much better choice?
Kona Jake the Snake - ~$2000 Ultegra/105 mix; good reviews, but I don't like orange colour design and it is Alu frame and almost 1kg heavier than Fuji :/

I plan to buy (or use old) road wheels wheels for road cycling, therefore I want a bike without disk brakes (this should decrease weight as well).

Well... I guess there should be other choices of Carbon frame CX bikes under $2500?
And another question is: does the carbon frame costs the compromise to shifters/brakes/deraillieurs?

Had a look on Felt F4x: Carbon frame, 8.57kg, Ultegra, but above my budget ~$2600
May be there is smth with similar specs to F4x, but for lower price? (but with good carbon frame, I heard cheapo carbon frames are worse than top quality Aluminium ones)
Is there any huge difference between Felt F4x and Fuji Altamira CX2.1? Because price difference is significant ($400)

Further research:
Scott Addict CX 2012 (with discount ~$2800), by specs it looks very nice, but it is further away from initial budget...
I feel that I won't even notice the difference between ultimate and 6 Avid's brakes, or ultegra/force/rival... So will the decision to buy the cheapest from all those bikes - be right? What would you do in my situation...

I want carbon frame (otherwise, I can just transform my old road bike into CX).

So I have read even more... And found that the "old" models (2011-2012) do not differ so much compared to 2013, but 2 times more expensive.
So I decided to search for 2012 model of more "advanced" line up, eg Scott Addict CX 2012; Felt F3x; Focus Mares CX2...

Where is 'Abroad" are those brands in shops, you can test ride ?

Common labels in the US ... a Hybrid is a medium width wheel 700c diameter type

A Cross Bike same sort of wheel Drop Bars, vs straight Bars ..

Europe they call Hybrids' Cross bikes' in some countries ..

but a 700-35 tire is a mid point between 23mm road wheels and 50mm MTB width wheel/tires.

People tend to talk about what they Own, that they can get for themselves..

whether they are even sold where you are is another thing..
