Cyclocross and Gravelbiking (Recreational) This has to be the most physically intense sport ever invented. It's high speed bicycle racing on a short off road course or riding the off pavement rides on gravel like :The Dirty Kanza". We also have a dedicated Racing forum for the Cyclocross Hard Core Racers.

SSCX Gear Ratio?

What's your Single Speed Cyclocross gear ratio. I'm currently running a 46x17, but it will soon be 40x17.

41x17 for flat and dry, 41x18 for hilly and dry, 39x18 for hilly and sloppy.

I raced at 39x18 this year on flat courses. I mostly left the singlespeed in the van if the course had anything that resembled a hill.

Now that CX season is over and my SSCX bike is in commuter mode, I'm using 39x16 but contemplating a switch to 45x18 or maybe even 47x18. Possibly after a summer riding that I'll be ready to bump my racing ratio up a bit.

42x19 which is around 61 gear inches if I remember correctly. It works well on everything from commuting to singletrack as long as the hills are not overly steep. With that being said, I have not raced it yet and I think it would be a bit on the high side for me on a hilly course. For me it is a great jack of all trades, master of none ratio but that is what I use my cross bike for. Through the week I commute on it and on the weekends it usually will see some singletrack. With that being said I am not the most fit rider out there.
