Thoughts on wheelbase length for a gravel bike?

Cyclocross and Gravelbiking (Recreational) This has to be the most physically intense sport ever invented. It's high speed bicycle racing on a short off road course or riding the off pavement rides on gravel like : "Unbound Gravel". We also have a dedicated Racing forum for the Cyclocross Hard Core Racers.

Thoughts on wheelbase length for a gravel bike?

What are your thoughts on wheelbase length when it comes to gravel trail riding? Is a long wheelbase preferable, or a short one?

I have a 93 Cannondale T-1000 that has slowly evolved into my gravel trail bike.

It performs well but is not as zippy as I'd like due to the long wheelbase. This makes for a stable and predictable ride but dodging rocks at high speed requires harder turns to get the rear wheel out of the way.

Of course there is no right answer for everyone...for me, I prefer comfort when riding gravel roads or dirt/gravel trails for hours at a time. I find my steel bike with (very) long wheelbase and 32mm tires feels very comfy when compared to my cross bike with 40mm tires and shorter wheelbase...and I attribute this to the wheelbase, and frame (steel vs aluminum). Like you've said, it won't turn fast, but I often just roll over small objects as opposed to stearing around them like I would with a skinny tire bike.
