Cyclocross and Gravelbiking (Recreational) This has to be the most physically intense sport ever invented. It's high speed bicycle racing on a short off road course or riding the off pavement rides on gravel like : "Unbound Gravel". We also have a dedicated Racing forum for the Cyclocross Hard Core Racers.

I went to a few bike shops today and was steered towards the Cannondale Quick CX 3 2014 $800 (with the flat handle bar, which I kind of want) and to the Fuji Cross 3.0 2014 (on sale for $1099).

Both seem like nice bikes but I'd love all of your suggestions and/or opinions. I haven't biked in 20 years and I am getting back into it. What do you think is a good quality bike without being too expensive?

A couple of months ago I got 2013 Ridley X-Bow. Great Bike. I wanted something efficient for fast road rides and the occasional trail, but not as stiff as a competition road bike. The carbon fork and 700c wheels with 38mm tires make for a smooth and reasonably comfortable ride. Swapped out the 11-25 cassette for a 11-28 and all is well.

I'd say go with the Fuji. The pogo-stick fork on the Cannondale will waste a lot of power if you're riding on the road (paved or unpaved). And flat bars may seem more comfortable to a beginner, but they're really limiting on longer rides (or windy days). I don't have weights for either bike, but I suspect the Fuji is at least a few pounds lighter than the Cannondale.
