do i really need to wash bike / tires after mud race?

I did a race. There is now dried mud on my bike and tires. Is that bad for my bike and tires? I figure as long as my chain is clean and lubed before I ride again -- and same with my cables -- that I'm OK. Otherwise, if it's not a moving part, doesn't dry mud just sit there? I mean, I'll wipe the bike off soon. And wipe off the tires, too. But is dry mud doing something bad just to be sitting there on my bike and tires?

how to quantify laziness in a competitor ..

Heck sometimes there is so Much mud you have to wash off a spare bike in the middle of the race, several times .

So adequately equipped CX competitors brings 2 bikes and a helper to hose off the spare,

and hand it, clean, to you as you loop by the Pits again. so practice those Hand Offs to not lose momentum..

You don't "need" to do anything. Wet mud is usually easier to clean off than dry mud, though, and it's not weightless. I try to keep my race bike reasonably clean in-season. Out of season, accumulating some grime between washes is NBD.

If it''s just dirty that's one thing but if it's globed on thick that's another. I suppose it's possible that the chemistry of the mud could mess with parts or paint IDK. Some people choose to just let it dry and then brush it off with a stiff paint brush.

This is a friend's Ibis after last weekend's race. I think she probably did 6 laps (Women B). I earned pizza afterwards for washing her bike. The Crux is my bike. I did 4 laps (Women C). I washed both bikes, and during the process I discovered that I had a loose chainring bolt (I bought the bike used). Yes, I think it's a good idea to wash your bike afterwards, especially when they provide a hose like at this race.

Another good reason to wash the bike soon afterwards is because the mud is still soft and will come off much easier.
