No. That was plan B. This is plan C.
Just going to let him ride. Might lose a chain. Enough folks here say a clutched RD is needed.

I need to know what I don't know. I'm smart enough to know this is new territory. I expect I can sell all this stuff in Feb and make out OK. I just wanted junior "on-par" or close enough to the equipment the others have, so equipment is not really an excuse. I buy a mechanical is an excuse, as is a few places over equipment But the full cross experience can be had with both his bikes. So going to chill - a wee bit.

If you child is military or you're military, contact the guys at Irish Cycles. They do a lot of cross and also run a military / veteran discount. Look for them at irishcycles.com .. Write them though, that is the way to get them to work with you. Big in North East and down in Carolinas.

Thanks - Kid is military. I may - but I just spent all my money.
I'm off the market for a few days.

Huh? Usually carbon bikes are lighter than steel or aluminum, even for cross

I agree on the frame. Not always the parts. We never sat down and had a father son talk about carbon vs metal (except for spokes and spindles) and as such that txt reviled his frame-of-reference - coming from road.

In this case, similar to others, road post is alloy ~99g. Thinking is Ti or carbon will offer a bit more flex and be less likely to snap for cross, although I doubt it likely with either material.

Posts don't snap that often but I see broken seats all the time. Put a cheap version of whatever shape he fits well. I personally don't believe a carbon vs alu seatpost will make any difference in cross. Being off the saddle is the solution to bumpy terrain.

Got the race build in about 17lbs.

Pretty sure I could hit the UCI limit with a few changes, we'll see about next year.

IMO better to not have "all your eggs in one basket", and have a second bike in case you crash the 1st or flat ,

then your helper in the pits will hand you the other bike. .. minimum time lost,

also good on muddy races ride it until soon too heavy with mud then swap.

The other pit bike is pretty good (crazy good used deal $1,100 with 1 set clinchers and 3 sets of tubular with mud tires). It has cable disc brakes that need to be improved. These TRP cable/hydro look interesting. There is the opportunity to choose wheels pre-race prior to start based on conditions. Right now, going with these for dry, going with the used mud for wet. So far there has not been a pit crew (2 races). I think at nationals in Jan, I will be that and we can have both bikes.

We are still playing with the shifting/brake rub etc. and I have semi-metallic pads in the mail I'm told work better. That may be mechanic disc inexperience. I get discs are a requirement for cross, but certain they are not worth it when compared to the DA rim brakes for road.

I went to a DA chain and I see SRAM has stamped SRAM chain only. Likely going to move to Shimano type (Wolf Tooth) ring on front.

The pulleys were also narrow/wide so I swapped them out. Why would pulleys need to be narrow/wide?

The PDX crowd's race days, has a single speed race, I would think it a cheap bike to gain handling skills on ,

mainly because less to break off or damage..

they used to come to the coast, use the county fair grounds, for Halloween weekend, a costume party-race..

Bend OR, has more money population, etc. , so they shifted the out of Portland races to there..

It's more likely not raining there that weekend, too..

We love Bend. We were there a couple times for Road Nationals.

Cross races are every weekend where he lives (CO) and the equipment may be his largest issue right now. Which is why I started an equipment thread. Maybe later - pit crew.

Handling skills cross from road riding pretty well, it is more getting used to the equipment limits/function.

Thank you.
This month...I'm swapping out the crank with a SRAM Red we have and going 42T Wolftooth. Might use a DA crank instead.

I'll do the 15# plan if it sticks after nationals.
