I found myself focused solely on my breathing during my first race.

being a mountain biker is definitely an advantage. in the 4's, c's, beginners, etc. i notice lots of racers being super timid in the turns or technical sections, which i suspect is from no dirt riding experience. find your line and pass them!

but as i mentioned elsewhere, i just realized i was automatically registered (since i put my age in) and i came up being in the 45+ 2/3/4 Masters...MASTERS? what does that mean? did i jump into something too big with everyone else a pure cx'r with cool flashy sponsor'd jerseys???:twitchy:

not really worried, but i do wish i was in the simple Cat 4 for BEGINNERS

I wouldn't worry about it. Being in the masters' group mostly means that you won't have to deal with all the 20-something guys who would elbow you into the ditch just to gain a spot (only the 45+ guys who would elbow you into the ditch just to gain a spot, and there aren't as many of those). The Cat 2 guys will lap you. That's no big deal, just give 'em room.

My theory is that "masters" was a name invented by some young racers who wanted to clear us out of their way but knew we wouldn't be as likely to sign up for the "old guys" category.

 yeah, i remember, though, as a kid, getting a package at christmas or birthday time with the title MASTER in front of my name! ha

anyways, unless there are two tracks, looks like the 35+ and 45+ masters are in the same race...both are at the same time slot
