There should be an Open class, also know as a citizen's race that is tailored to novice racers, the course doesn't change or anything but the race time is usually reduced to a half hour.
If not you can always race the the 3/4s class just don't be bummed if you come in at the end of the field, we've all been there.

You'll be a cat 4, then depending on your age you may be in the 35+, 45+ etc. Go race, have fun and fight like crazy not to come in last.

I did my first-ever race last fall at DCCX. They had a Rookies Race which was non-sanctioned. I got my ass kicked just as badly as I did in the 35+/45+ Cat 3/4 I did on the same day (my race age is 45). It seemed that most of the "rookie" riders were participating in road or mtb races, but were technically CX rookies.
So if you find an event that has a Rookie race, go for it. Otherwise, just do the Cat 4. Your lungs and legs will be screaming so loud in either race that you won't know the difference.
BTW, I had a freakin' blast and can't wait until this fall.
