Open Tubular Experience?
Anyone have experience with the 'Open Tubulars' like those from Challange - (i.e. they are essentially tubulars but with a bead sewn in for mounting on a clincher).
I read some good reviews from roadies for the Road tires - but not too much from cyclocrossers. My deal is that I'm 200 lbs and when running Tubbies at a pressure low enough to help in a cross race, I'm prone to rolling them at high speeds around corners (did it twice last year). Tubless tires freak me out. Seems both options are better suited for lighter riders so I'm looking for a good compromise. Any suggestions would be helpful. |
AFAIK, It is another name for a clincher tire, promoted by Companies that make both types.
mights just have to get as wide a tire as will pass the max width gage for the event.. UCI cares, most lower level races don't. |
It seems to be marketing speak for a higher TPI count (more supple) sidewall than their regular clincher. It's basically marketing speak. That said, I'm thinking about running the griffos as a general conditions tire. They're light and the tread is proven. I'm 195 and had perfectly good results this last season with my clinchers and had no flats even while running low pressures. I'm sure some of that were the rims, but that's another story...
I was able to roll my Maxxis Mudwrestlers at low pressure, but the most that happened was some grass getting stuck between the tire bead and rim. |
Use more glue?

what gluing method did you use and what kind of pressures were you running when you rolled your tubulars? bummer that happened. but that it happened twice might mean it's a set-up issue.

I weigh 205lbs and never roll tubulars. You need to glue them on better and yeah the trick is to not skimp on the glue.

for low psi riding on studded mtb tires, gluing one bead to the rim was suggested,
wont resolve pinch flats, but the tire creep won't carry the tube with it and shear off the stem. |
