Another CX workout today. It always kicks my butt. This was no different. I'm trying to put in a lot of cornering in the lap. Some of it is really tight, but that's the stuff that's so easy to suck at. This week had a short, sandy hill that was reasonably technical (I had to get off the bike twice from spinning in the sand), a descent that was probably steeper and more technical than any I've actually seen at a race and the nasty run-up from last time, which is also at least as tough as anything I've seen at a race.
There's another descent that I could use, but I just don't have the balls to do it, yet. It would be no big deal on my mountain bike, but on the cross bike it's just a bit more gnarly than I feel comfortable doing when training alone and knowing I'll be hitting it while in oxygen dept. Maybe with the new bike I'll feel differently. I actually road it twice, but I have to stand at the top and suck it up a little to do it. That also lets me position the bike so I'm on the best line. The problem with riding it during the lap is that you'll be off the best line and then you'd have to be a better rider than I feel like I am.
If I keep this up, maybe even twice a week when the season gets closer, I think I'll be much better prepared for this cross season that I've ever been before.

End of June isn't exactly last minute for a Sep-Feb season.
SoCal was supposed to be out by end of June.
Not yet, but should be soon.
I got prelim AZ schedule and might try one in November out there.

Wish I could make it to all of those! Are those SECCA training races out in winston-salem? I always have a hard time finding anything outside of the NCCX series. The racing scene is pretty barren out on the east side of NC.

Eastern NC is tough for CX. The practice series is in Winston & they also have a Sunday race on Sept. 30th. I've heard that there's a practice series in Raleigh this year as well.

Been seeing more and more CX bikes race in our local MTB race series.
SoCal tentative race schedule is out and some clinic/practices are being announced as well.
I'll start my CX training a little late as I head to Hawaii for a week soon.
Been riding and racing (poorly) at MTB all summer.

First day out on the CX bike in a long time. Breaking in the track at our local practice course... so fun.

Got out to a skills clinic on Wednesday (my thigh is still hurting from all the remounts). First race on Saturday!

Yeah, that's the one. I thought it was very good. I ended up in a group that was being led by Erik's wife, Rhonda Mazza, and another guy (whose name, I'm sorry to say, didn't stick in my memory). For the first week, they broke down the dismount/remount process into small steps (getting your right leg over the saddle, coasting on the left pedal, finding the balance point on the top tube and getting your hand there while coasting, etc., etc.) and we practiced each bit on its own and then gradually put them together. It may sound pedantic and/or dorky, but it's actually quite helpful. I seem to manage to rediscover the "hop step" remount every year, and these clinics help get rid of it. We ended up actually going over barriers just at the end of the evening. They said next week we'll reviewing this stuff and then add some new stuff -- probably shouldering technique and run-ups.
