New cx racer: Hooked but I SUCK!

"So how hard can it be?"

"It's only 40min...."

"There aren't any long climbs and it's not hot?...sound easy"

HOLY $&@!... So I'm an adequate road rider. I do centuries and lots and lots of metrics in decent times. I could probably do a double century if so inclined(no interest). So I figured I could surely do pretty well in a 40min ride around a local park. Boy was I wrong! 15 minutes in and I was sucking wind with my dreams of being on the podium now changed to not being last! I heard "3 more" and couldn't believe I had to do that 3 more times.

So I "competed" in 3 races this year and learned a lot, met some of the coolest ppl I know, and most importantly had a freaking blast. My cycling goals for 2015 now includes a podium finish in a cx race. I'm looking forward to getting into cx shape and can't wait for next season!!!!

That sounds like me, except that seven years and 127 races later my goal is still to finish in the top half of a race. I got ninth out of 16 in a Clydesdale race a couple of years ago, but that's as close as I've come. More typical for me is 139 out of 168. I'm still having a lot of fun though!

it's definitely a lot of fun!
we had a "fun" race last weekend. no points, just a quick get together kinda of thing. what made it interesting was, us cat5 folks got to race with the cat3/4's for a change. of course we got lapped by the top 3 but i was able to hang within reach of the top ten for a lap. it gave me a glimpse as to how hard i need to train to cat up.

We have a new league starting January through March. I'm pretty excited about extending the season.

Sounds like me too, but I haven't raced that much yet. I just hope to finish mid-pack or better (depending on the field). Tons of fun, but it kills me!

This will be my first season. I went to a Wenzel Coaching 'cross clinic 2 weeks ago. Even that wore me out but 'cross is such a blast you can't help but want to keep doing it. I'm just psyched to get to my first race!

Pantani - I saw that clinic...I was doing practice laps on the course while you guys were out there. Good to see so many new folks!

I dropped by practice in the local park, on my commuter. One "slow" lap to show us newbies the course plus two laps were enough for both my bike and for me. It was a toss up between me and the fat tire guy for slowest, but what a blast!

It was awesome! Drills on mounting, dismounting, hurdles, carrying drills, navigating turns, and laps on the track. Yotsko, I'm so jealous you've got that up in your neck of the woods. What a great place to ride/race! I'm 2 1/2 hours away but plan on making the trip up to get some racing time in. And yes, the class was well worth taking. We had quite a few vets in the class then said they picked up a lot of pointers as well.

hahaha....yep. yep yep yep.

I maintained 20.6 MPH on the way to my office on a road bike (Roubaix). It's 19.1 miles. Not half bad. Right?

well i SUCK at CX. I've done 3 races, and each time, I go to the last place finisher, and start upward, and i'm in the bottom 10 every time.

but damn is it fun. So many cool people, such a cool culture.

I'm not to the point where I'm determined to lose weight so I can get a new bike (I have to earn it)

I just did my first 'cross last Tuesday. All i can say is WOW! I love 'cross! With that said I had no idea of the effort required for a 30 minute race. People think it's just 30 minutes. It's 30 minutes redlined! We have a few hills that zapped a ton of energy. I was spent but couldn't wait to do it again (on another day). What a great community and a great time! Just enjoy and you'll get better each time.
