11.23.02 Downtown San Francisco, Oakland Ecovillage Potluck

I fixed a huge tasty Spanish omelet this morning shortly after waking up. Brian, Elena, and Meghan seemed to enjoy it. We finally got moving after noon and took the public transit over to the downtown market. They were just closing down when we arrived. I bought some naan at a stand and then joined the others for some conversation with their friend Sebastian who was selling olive oil from his family’s Sacramento orchard. From the market, we walked down to Fisherman’s Wharf and checked out the tourist frenzy amongst all the shops. We watched some stinky barking sea lions lying out on the docks and then went to get some tasty chowder at Fisherman’s Grotto. We passed by some street entertainers painted silver and dancing for tips. Meghan looked for her cousin Morgan who works on a Dungeness crab boat. We actually found him and spent some time talking to him while having some tea and coffee. He was a cool guy, about my age, and we traded stories about our experiences on fishing boats. He almost hooked up a nice hour-long boat tour for us that would have been free and taken us around Alcatraz Island and under the Golden Gate Bridge, but the tour boat filled up. We got going back to Elena’s place after some time downtown at a cool little bookshop. Elena and Brian were going to a show tonight and Meghan and I were headed for a potluck in Oakland. Earlier today, I got in touch with a Servas host in Oakland who is part of an interesting community called the Ecovillage. It is basically a community the gets together and sponsors free events that have to do with a number of things from environmental and political awareness to self-improvement and educational workshops. Because we were short for time, Meghan and I drove to the potluck. Without too much difficulty except for a bit of traffic, we made it to Oakland and to Stephen’s house. There were 30 or more people eating and chatting. We got some food and I started talking with people and checking out the friendly scene. I met quite a few people and discussed my trip a bit. Everyone seemed to have quite a variety of backgrounds. There weren’t very many people my age at the potluck. I did meet one, named Arias. He had helped Stephen build a cob house in the back yard that was shaped like a giant turtle. Arias is into permaculture and natural building. About 20 of us gathered in the living room to take part in the meeting where next months calendar of activities is arranged. We introduced ourselves and got a chance to put something on the calendar. I decided to put a date on the calendar in the first week of December to talk about my trip. I thought I might be able to get a few photos together and maybe some kind of organized talk about my experiences so far. After the meeting, I talked with a few more of the people who live in Stephen’s building and checked out the turtle in the back yard. Since yesterday, I had been feeling like a cold was coming over me. It was late at night now and I had become more congested and sore in the throat. It seemed like a good time to make the trek back to San Francisco, so Meghan and I said goodbye and hit the road. It was a bumpy ride back on confusing one-way streets but we made it back just fine. Shortly after arriving, Brian and Elena returned from their show. After a little late night chat, everyone hit the sack for bedtime.

Peace

Dave
