SolarStorm X2 2 x Cree XM-L U2 1200lm 4-Mode White Bicycle Light - Black (4 x 18650)

There has been a lot of interest from the bicycle community in this light and fantastic user feedback lately, so I thought I would give you a closer look at it and answer some of the common questions I am hearing.

First, the SS X2 is featuring the new Cree XM-L U2 emitter. The XLamp XM-L LED is the industry’s highest performance, single-die white lighting-class LED and the U2’s are the most up to date, brightest and most efficient of the lot with a cool white beam color.

The lamp has dual XM-ls lined up in a very small and lightweight body. The reflectors are smooth and deep giving excellent throw but with plenty of spill for good overall lighting. This light is one of the brightest I have tested for its size and number of emitters.

The small, water-tight light housing has excellent heat sink fins on two sides as well as the bottom. They are deeper than many heat sinks and provide adequate cooling. The relatively compact size of the housing makes it an easy install for any handlebars (using one of the two different sized rubber bands) or it can be installed on a bike helmet if that is your style.

The battery pack pouch is black nylon and holds the set of (4) 18650 cells that are soldered and shrink-wrapped together. It has a long strap and Velcro for attachment to a tube or belt. One nice feature is the connection point for the power wire. It uses an o-ring as well as a screw down cap to keep the connection tight and waterproof, much nicer than most remote battery set-ups.

For charging, the kit includes a flat pin style charger that also has charge indicator lights:

Red = charging
Green = Full charge

The light has four modes, Low-Mid-High and strobe. One thing that is nice is that the normal modes are single push access while the strobe (which most of us would not use) requires a 2-3 second hold down, so there is no need to switch past the strobe mode every time, a very nice touch.

A great feature of the light is the voltage indicators. There are three of them and they light up in relation to how much battery time is remaining. The breakdown is thus:

Power 80% or more = 3 lights
Power 50%-80% = 2 lights
Power 30 min. or less = 1 light (flashing)

So you won’t be left out in the dark with this one. The indicator lights remain on whenever the battery pack is connected so obviously you would want to disconnect for any long periods of time that the light is not in use.

Overall this is a fantastic light and one that is hard to beat at this price especially complete with battery pack and charger. We currently have this light on Sale at DX.com click here to see the price.

does it also have a rating in Lux?

Hi Brons

Unfortunately it doesn't have a Lux rating. I will try and do some digging and see what I can come up with.
