Reflectors etc. in Toronto
I'm set on bringing my bike when I visit Toronto in Oct. What are the laws regarding reflectors, etc.?? I only currently have a reflective saddle bag and that's it. What else do I need to equip the bike with??

Mountain Equipment Coop, at 400 King W, has an excellent selection of lights at very reasonable prices. Lifetime membership is $5.

Nobody is going to ticket you for reflectors. If you're missing lights, you may get a warning or ticket. Unlikely though, unless it's "bike safety blitz" week.

The law says you need reflective tape on the forks and seat stays. One bike in a hundred (maybe) complies. The chances of being ticketed are quite small.
I would say it's smart to have lights and you can get them fairly cheaply at MEC (link above).

Also the law requires a bell or sounding device. They do actually give tickets for this. I know some one who got one because his bell wasnt working well enough. Bike safety week is the prime time for these silly tickets.

downtown riding w/o reflectors shouldn't be too bad ... it's when you enter midtown and past that into the suburbs that you will REALLY need it, especially at nite past like 8 or 9. there are some awful drivers even when you're suited up with reflector vest and all, imagine how much worse it would be if you weren't at all visible!
