battery and temperatures
 

Hi , Ive heard that lithium batteries shouldn't be exposed to too much "cold & heat" , and that temperature plays a role in the life of the battery . What are the temperatures where this effectively becomes a problem ? On average , during winter would 13 deg C min and summer 28 deg C max have an effect , or are they referring to more extreme temperature conditions ?

13C (55F) shouldn't be a problem; 28C (82F) could be a concern if you're taxing the battery (into the wind, uphill etc); sounds like you reside in CA; I rode my 36V, 350w system at temps up to 95F last year and the battery didn't seem to get hot, but 175# rider, flat terrain, no wind (socal).

2old , that's good to know . Where I am (gold coast aust) is flat and coastal , it rarely gets windy , good days outnumber them . My concern was when the bike isn't getting used it sits in the garage on a 28C (82F) day (covered and in the shade) wether that heat would bugger it . Its a 48v 12ah 200w .

Rick, sounds like an ideal place like socal (for me); 60F - 80F sounds like an ideal temp for a battery to be stored; if it gets much hotter and the battery can be removed easily, I'd consider bringing it into the house (since it's not LiPO)

2old , I just googled "SOCAL" Near long beach ,,,right ? Looks like a great place near L.A , or are you near san luis osbisbo , where the musicman basses are built ? if ever I came to the US id beeline it to LA '

Mate, on the gold coast you have no worries temperature wise.

I ride my bike well below 0 C, and at higher temperatures too. Just make sure the battery/motor/controller doesn't get hot if you are pushing it. Now if your bike was sitting in a hot room where outside temperatures were over 40 C, I might want to do some more research.

Rick, you're right, Long Beach area, but about 30 miles south. Ideal weather and lots of recreation areas. San Louis Obisbo is about 300 or so miles north, and one of the neatest places that I've visited (many times) with the best MTB terrain to ride (Montana Del Oro State Park), probably almost exactly like your north shore, but with hills.

Hi bob , yes , I only need to go 45 mins in any direction inland and in in the hills and many scenic rides to be had . I also have a motorbike and go on runs with a couple of mates on weekends .
So from my front door less than 1 km eastbound im at the beach ,, and west ive got the mtns .
Gold coast is a cavalcade of cyclists .
BTW , the new battery I got , I don't want to brag too much ,,,yet ! but I still haven't ridden it any further than 46 kms and using only 20% of its power ,,,,(NO BULL) That's on flat ground . I must go a long ride to calculate this ,,,,but you know what ? I think im gonna be very pleasantly surprised !
