Ebike building side gig?

Anyone here converting bikes as a side gig? I'm mechanically inclined, was getting ready to add a bafang mid drive to my big dummy and in discussions with friends and others about it, there appears to be enough interest and demand to try it on. Wondering if anyone here is doing it and what their real hourly wage ends up being.

Look at endless sphere for a discussion that suggested it was viable only if you didn't have any assets for someone to attach if they had a problem (accident) with one, although another thread by one individual said he was doing "well". Not for me; CA is too litigious.

The customer will buy from you because you commit to support the bike. If you can handle the idiot customers that are going to burn up their motors on hills and demand their money back, go for it.

It is a bit risky for a side gig anywhere in the U.S. I had the national bicycle manufacturers insurance for framebuilding, it was $2k a year. Probably more now. That is the same insurance that bike shops carry.

I can see doing the installs on customer supplied bikes and customer supplied ebike parts. Of course, people probably want you to supply the ebike parts. Then product liability and warranty claims problems are involved. Seems easy way to lose money
