Motor reverse??
I was just riding along on my bike I built about 10 years ago. A 750 watt 36 volt rear hub motor.
All of the sudden it came to a dead stop and started going backwards. What would cause the motor to change direction in an instant?

I am not qualified to answer, but got curious and looked into it, from what I have read seems like bad capacitor is a possible cause that can lead to that happening. Could be totally off base, but might be something to look into?

mix and match the power leads from controller to the motor to make it go forward again. (Green, yellow, blue) That may be easier than a new controller. I have some controllers that just happen to go backwards out of the box. Never heard of a motor changing its mind about which way is forward.

I use three phase motors on my Quad copters (drones) so swapping the wires was a last resort. Yesterday I tore the controller apart. It has been outside in the Pacific Northwest most of it's life so there was quite a bit of corrosion. I wire brushed it off good and cleaned all the connections. Everything actually looked pretty good. There was a wire hanging on by a thread so today I'll solder it back on and see.

Hopefully, the re-soldering it will fix the problem. No obvious places for a short?

The solder job looks good for cheapo Chinese board, and no brown spots, so my hopes are up. It's been a good and faithful ride. I'll get to it this afternoon and see.

I got it all cleaned up and ready to put back together and decided to hook up the power without soldering the loose wire to see if that was the problem. Everything worked great. I soldered the wire back in place and put everything back together and covered all the connections with tape. Yeee Haaa. I took it for a good long ride and well, What can I say, I have no idea what the problem was. Must have been some bad JU JU. Just needed some laying on of hands. I think it has a little more power too.
