Deviations From Theme
10 years ago this was a fantastic site that had individuals without agendas trying to help each other. Now, a thread in which an individual asked for assistance was closed because it turned into a slugfest. My advice is don't argue, just stay on topic.

I agree 2old - it doesn’t lead anywhere - people have their own predispositions, right or wrong
just learn to ignore and move on with some |
For me, better yet is the "Ignore" function.
|
I've learned the worst offenders often move on to bother other forums. My sign off was a play on one of those
|
I would play Devil's Advocate and say it is still a fantastic site. Even 10 years ago, there were folks who misbehaved. (I had an account previously; forgot what it was. I've been around for at LEAST 10 years...)
I recall that 10 years ago, moderation was a bit more active and a bit more heavy-handed, for better and for worse. There are just too many threads for moderators to keep up until someone flags the post with the report button. (it is the little red exclamation point below the user name in the post, on the computer interface) When that is clicked and a short message explaining the report is typed, the moderation staff is swift and efficient. The trick is resisting the urge to always have the last word. Sometimes, we just have to let it go and realize the other person is never going to come around to our way of thinking, or at least not in the near future. Re. Ignore. I try not to use that, as even people who seem to generally be annoying can make a good point now and then. If they're bad enough to ignore, they're usually bad enough to report. ;) |
People proud of their ignore lists are generally not people fit for online public forums. I always find it sad and laughable when people are talking about the ignore function but I know there are people in the world who like to have their own world and only hear what they want to hear and don't like to hear a variance in that. I deal with them all the time. "Don't give me anything but praise and positivity and never say anything I haven't already said or already agree with". I would say it is the younger generations but there are plenty of older folks who have that same mentality. It is an online forum if you cannot hang and get hurt when someone doesn't shower praise on you or your product, then online forums are just not a safe space for you. You will get differing opinions but that is how we learn and grow which is a good thing.
In terms of the golden days of the forums, there were certainly some past members who added some fun and some sub-forums were a bit busier but it will always ebb and flow and it is certainly still active. |
“Ignore” to me means not using an ignore list, just getting to the point where you ignore comments posted by the instigators
in terms of differing opinions, that is all well and good, but when you go on the offensive with preconceived notions to the point of replying ignorantly, that shouldn’t be tolerated no matter what level of experience you have, or claim to have, obnoxious behavior is not tolerated on any level |

Though I have the feeling you are trying to direct that my way but I have never made any claims that say something is something that it is clearly not. That is dishonesty and I don't really have time for that. |
I was directing my comments at no one, however, if you personally offended by the comments made, it says something
arrogance and condescension does not equal knowledge respect is key |

always good to be perceptive
i have a good read on people |

Some of them are so predictable an individual could write their post for them. For me, there are some who never have anything worthwhile. |
Nothing to do with this site, but on another forum someone posted a video of his newer Bosch motor and the noise it made when pedalled backwards (usual clicking). I replied it sounds perfectly normal and I also was worried about every sound the motor made after such an expensive purchase.
He replied with a few choice adjectives and insisted he knows what his bike normally sounds like. So, it is everywhere, and yes, I did block him |

https://cimg7.ibsrv.net/gimg/bikefor...36d7524694.jpg Still a lot of friendly folks. The forum has also moved away from conversions. One can often get a better bike waiting for a clearance or a sale for less money than building, The Vitesse Flair for under $300 comes to mind, and in other forums folks are chuckling over their $1400 mid drives that Walmart gave them for $349. I am thinking most people should do the buy over a make decision. |
Mr DW, an Electrical Engineer, is being way too complimentary considering the information that I've gleaned from him (including asking him question(s) privately). BTW, I didn't mean that this wasn't a fantastic forum now, and maybe it's even better than 10 years ago.

WHAT DOES THIS HAVE TO DO WITH ELECTRIC BIKES**********!!!!!**********
(OK, just using hyperbole to make a point) :) As for me, I'll put up with only so much, and then they're on the expansive "ignore" list. Life is too short to interact with people like that - trolls, people who enjoy sowing disagreement, people who are Always 100% Right No Matter What, etc. Makes the site much more enjoyable. And shake my head seeing some of those same names posted on the Banned Users thread. |
RCM, if you mean my post, sorry.
|
It certainly is "electrifying." Might have been better in General Cycling Discussion or User Suggestions, but I'm not about to ping a mod to move it. Carry on...
