Looking to get a new bike and convert it

My old hand me down mountain bike was left in the garage all of last winter, and subsequently the fork turned into cement(-20 degrees can do that lol) So I'm wondering what bike I may want to get to replace it. I'm planning on installing a brushless motor hub to whatever bike I have in the near future. I was looking at a mongoose for around $200 but I've seen the Trek 820 for $300... Does anyone recommend the Trek? Or else what I should look for in a bike when I'm going to modify it(such as weight, durability etc)? Thanks!
