Question locking up ur battery ??!?

i recently ordered an ebike and now im wondering what im gonna do to stop someone from jacking my battery when i got this thing locked up... i got some nice on guard locking skewers for the tires and a masterlock street cuff to secure the frame, but im wondering is it possible to use a regular cable lock to lock the bag down to the rack?

what do u guys have to keep ur batteries from being stolen ?? please post pictures if u can.

What kind of batteries? If they are Lead-acid, don't bother locking them up. For all other batteries, just take them in with you.

This is a hot topic. I'm surprised not more is being said about this.

I for one have used an interim solution, which is, when I park my bike and don't want to take my battery with me, I lock the bike using one U lock and lock the battery on the bike using cable lock. The funny thing is, that the battery costs more than the bike itself and yet it's locked using an inferior device.

A respectable battery is at leats 20 lbs, and it's not always something you want to lug around if you're only going in a store to pick up something.

There may be 1000 bike thiefs, but only 10 are after your battery. The other 990 either don't care about your battery, don't know what the heck it is, or would rather steal your bike. With that said, most thiefs are opportunists and would like to make a quick enough getaway. So, if you are able to lock up your battery in such a way that a thief would have to breach the lock in order to get at it, then you are pretty safe. Also, if you lock it outside only during daylight hours, you increase the safety of your equipment from theft. You might want to consider some sort of hard case that is lockable, e.g. Ortlieb.

Totally I agree with this. If I have to stop in for 15 minutes, I don't want to lug that sucker around, especially not a 48V 13Ah sucker, even if it were Li-Ion.

Or if you could come up with something like this with a lockable hinged door that you could pop your battery in, then the hole is where you put your wire lock through. The hole goes all the way through to the other side. Your battery cells are built around it. More just thinking out loud.

Ok,a few stupid questions, here we go..

1) having a hard case is fine, but how do you secure it to the bike? Say the Louis Garneau example by stokell?

2) the electricrider black box posted by Maxximum, that looks like it can be scured to a rack, can you tell me more about it, where do i find specs for it?

Do something like the Bionx kit:

It mounts a railing to the bike via the bottle cage fixation. When the battery pack is mounted on the rail, the screws are covered and the rail can't come off. The Battery pack has a locking system with a key to prevent theft. Very simple and very clever.

i know the ortlieb has the screws inside the case that screw into the rack, so that you must break open the case to get at them

the case is locked with a key

A good way would be to combine the case with a pitlock, or another lock (maybe a cable lock?)
Someway to get a pitlock to lock the case to the bike, or rack, or to pitlock the rack securely to the bike using the brake pitlocks, then find some way to use a lock, like a cable lock or padlock to lock the case shut.

3 points of locking:

1) Case to close
2) Case to lock onto rack
3) Rack to lock onto bike

Or use a pelican hard case,

and retrofit a lock onto it. Sturdy and waterproof.
