Hi, I have a silly question but I'd like to double check with the guys on this thread that have the experience with this because I don't

My setup: I have 2 x 12Ahr Schwinn battery packs for a total of 24 Ahr at 24Volts ( this is the way I have it wired up because range is very important for my morning commute.)

Here's my question: If I wire it up as a 48V 12Ahr battery pack, should I be able to get roughly the same range if I'm disciplined enough to take it easy on the throttle?

To me, it makes sense, but I was wondering what experience tells you guys?

48v is a good area for the schwinn. It's safe for the controller and you will go faster and just as far if you pedal assist.

To get better range, get some yardworks lithium ion from ct and hook 2 in parallel, 2 in series and hook them together. You'll be amazed at the power and range.

Problem with the izip is the controller. It's not that forgiving and with lithium you get a lot of juice and it could trip the controller. I've sort of gone past the little currie motor and am replacing them with 1000w units so my izip is not longer stock in any way.

I'm planning on switch to the yardworks battery before winter comes. I don't expect much life from my SLA, they might be worn out by November.

The yardworks are one heck of a good deal. I looked at alternative at Home Depot, and nothing comes close. The battery packs were only 18V 3Ah and costed $118 each.

don't forget the wieght savings switching to yw...it was what i noticed the most
for the weight of 1.5 sla you could put 4 yw limn02...the power(right till the end)
the speed(right till the end) the weight savings (all the time)...faster charging

you might as well pump 48v thru it with lead(lol)
untill you get your yw bats...dbl speed and dbl acceleration
you will suprize alot of drivers when you go to 48v...

I don't know if I'd recommend 48V for the motor. Seems I remember reading on the other newsgroup of a few people that have burnt their motor because it overheated at 48V. Some modified the motor by drilling holes in the cover plate or forcing air with an electric ventilator inside the motor. AT 48V with an unmodified motor I'd proceed with caution unless you are ready to order another from TNC scooters for $60 + s&h. I'd stick with a max of 40V or 36V.

well i have hammered mine at 54-55v for a bit with no mods
and it flies...50+kmh it's wearing faster but for the price of
1 of these little workhorses getting a year of wear and 5000km
for a 100 bucks seems reasonable....2yw will be a big improvement
for your bike but if you already have 48v of sla try it ...testing and all

You may be interested by these threads then if you are at 55V or thinking of 48V. There are some risks, but I do agree that $60 for a replacement motor is very reasonable.

Now I'm not sure if I want to give it a try.

I really need the range more than the speed.

But, I'm only human, so I don't know if I can resist the temptation to run if fast and often.

True, $60 is a pretty good deal, but in order to avoid down time, maybe I'll order one in advance.

bTW, the yard works perform well tight through to the end of the discharge, right?

What are the odds that I only need 2 yardworks(12Ahr) instead of 4 SLA(24Ahr)?

My 24Ahr of SLA is recharging in under 8 hours so thats about a 16AHr(or less) discharge per trip. I'm extremely out of shape and overweight so maybe improvements in health alone could get my power consumption down to 12Ahr

yup power till the end...2x yw bats=41v@6ah...about 10-12km no pedaling
you will be impressed how much power you make just pedaling along(going
through the motions) get a ca and you will see exactly were your helping
and how much wh/h your burning...just a little pedaling will start to drop
weight off...it is a lifestyle change to correct past problems and riding your
bike is a great move in the right direction...
