I'm considering a whole new set-up, maybe even a whole 'nother ebike to supplement what I already have. It seems like the highly desirable lithium phosphate batteries are finally spreading out into the market. At the same time, I'm thinking that I should just go with SLA's since they are cheap.

So, what motor/bike could I get that is compatible with a variety of batteries?

Also, do the SLA's have to be run all the way down before re-charging?

It's pretty easy to convert any e-bike to Li-Ion. If you're considering new bike entirely, you might consider an IZIP. If you go with one of their lower-end models with SLA (ie: IZIP Trailz AL, IZIP Mountain Trailz, etc.) you'll have the option to upgrade to Li-Ion next year. Currie is creating a new Li-Ion battery pack which will fit into the existing rack-mount design in 2009. So if you want to upgrade... it's as easy as buying a new battery and plugging it in.

About the batteries... you actually want to do the opposite (if possible): don't ever let SLA batteries run all the way down. Try to keep SLAs topped off whenever you're not riding and always re-charge directly after use.

Thanks ecowheelz. I've been looking at the Izips and Ezips and wondering about just that question. Sounds like the SLA's are like lithium-ion in that they like to be charged up. So is it the nickel hydride that like to be run down?

It is NiCD should be deep discharged. Li and SLA should be charge up as soon as possible. NiMH like to operate between 20-80% of charge for maximum life.
